The Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild Bites the Dust -- Union Bank Forecloses Art Show
Looks like the Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild has outs own problems with financial institutions, namely the Union Bank a subject of frequent criticism for its financial practices. A larger than usual crowd gathered at the Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild on Thursday, it turned out because this was the final art show ever after 15 years at the location in the rear of the Union Bank building on Paseo Delicias. Union Bank officials who were not named told Guild officials last week they had to be off the premises by the end of May. They said they needed to expand the bank facility. Also evicted with one months warning, the Rancho Santa Fe Foundation. Guild officials said they had no new location identified or idea how they would find one. However, they said they had several good options they hoped to pursue. Until that time, it was unclear how members or the guild would show work locally. The new show will be held at a member's house, according to officials. Union Bank officials could not be reached for comment.
---------------------------------------------------------------------- For more information, visit: http://ranchosantafeartguild.org The Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild was formed in 1993 for the following purposes; 1. To support and encourage visual artists in our community and county 2. To provide funds for art education and outreach efforts such as scholarships for art majors, programs in schools, art programs, art teaching, education to the public on the benefits of art education and collecting. 3. To provide talks on how important the arts are to our lives and society. 4. To host field trips to view collections and artist's studios. 5. To support a gallery with art for sale for the purpose of supporting guild activities and outreach programs. The majority of our Artist Members are residents of Rancho Santa Fe (51%) and the surrounding area. Each member serves on one or more committees, or holds a position on the board of directors, or both. Committees are organized around guild functions or events, and each committee has a chair who reports to the board. The Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild maintains 501 c3 status. The primary Guild functions and events are as follows; Hanging and promoting new art exhibits in our main gallery and several satellite galleries every 2 months. Fund Raising events throughout the year in support of the guild and our charities. The Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild strives to provide a focus on art in our lives, community, and county. We provide a place where our residents can browse the latest show in our gallery, attend receptions and fundraisers, and purchase art knowing that proceeds support local charities and outreach programs. Please join us and visit our gallery! Should an artist employ a sales rep? Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild members consider... It wasn't easy being green for Kermit the Frog and it isn't easy getting greenbacks through selling art, according to Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild members at the group's winter show opening. Guild members agreed most contemporary artists who haven't established an enormous reputation (i.e. 99.9 percent of artists) generally establish themselves at one, or two, local galleries; or show, and sell, through an art guild or club. Otherwise, it's not like literature or the music business where agents and reps are able to create careers, sometimes even demand. Longtime art guild officer Cindy Klong had several pieces at the winter show, a valuable opportunity to display and publicize her efforts, she said. She also maintains online galleries and shows at other galleries. Unfortunately, the chance to connect directly with audiences through galleries is becoming ever rarer, said Barbara Dawson, who owned galleries in La Jolla and Del Mar before returning to full-time curating and creating. Economic conditions have caused most art collectors to pare down on purchases while rising property values have forced galleries into costly rental situations resulting in cutbacks and closures, Dawson said. Long story short, unless you're in the $50,000+ per piece sales category, the best way to succeed and sell, for now, is do it yourself, guild members say, which means aligning with a guild, group and gallery. Then, see if you can take it up a notch from there, fate willing and the Visigoths don't rise.
As for the rest of the story, the new show was OK, the wine was good. They need to do a better job on appetizers and have healthy choices rather than pigs-in-a-blanket mini-hot dog cuisine. In other words, stay classy Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild. And wait, here's more, straight from the art guild's mouth:

The Jews of Europe in the Middle ages: A Story of Survival "Few people have a history more filled with triumph and pain than the Jews of Europe. After the fall of the ancient state of Israel, the Jewish people moved in great numbers to the west. Here they found friendship, opportunities and persecution. What did the medieval world of Judaism involve, and what did the people of that era create? How and why were Jews persecuted? This is a story which historians and archaeologist are only now bringing to light. Come and explore a story of defiance and triumph in the face of persecution and oppression."

Lane widening with additional moveably carpool lanes to accommodate an estimated doubling in north-south freeway traffic over the next 20 years is nearing completion along the inland Interstate 15 route. Mainly paid for by Transnet taxes approved by voters and federal highway funds, the inland route wet through with no opposition. The companion Interstate 5 project first proposed nearly five years ago also had gone through the process with barely a whimper of opposition. However, an in-depth draft environmental report issued this spring caught fire along the coast, first at Solana Beach, then at Del Mar and now at Oceanside and Encinitas. Several citizens groups have formed in the last three months, each with a singular mission: stop the project in its planning tracks. Reasons to oppose the project have shifted, with more, and different, reasons seemingly added by the meeting-load. Original opposition at Solana Beach centered on the environmental impacts. These quickly were supplanted at Del Mar by concerns over the "Los Angelisation" of the region with added freeway lanes turning the lone coastal commuter freeway route into a tangle of traffic similar to the "Beat L.A.'" lifestyle of the "Southland" to the north. Lately, at Oceanside and the southern North County coastal communities, concerns over displacement of residents through eminent domain seizures have predominated at opposition halls. And now this, on Sept. 13, as a coalition of opposition groups held a town hall anti-lane expansion conference at the Encinitas Community Center that drew 300 people, Many people brought up the threat of increased automobile emissions and air pollution. This video was made by an Encinitas I-5 expansion opposition group of an attempt last month to have the Encinitas Council discuss the project.
So, make that air pollution, traffic congestions, property seizures and declining values, noise, as some of the many reasons galvanizing opposition to the project. Many people, and local government officials, now are demanding Caltrans extend its Oct. 7 deadline for commenting on the 9,000-page draft environmental impact document. They want the deadline extended through Thanksgiving. Caltrans officials have not yet responded to concerns as they finished a series of their own multimedia community informational outreach meetings that drew considerably fewer participants than the noisy community opposition meetings. For the record, Caltrans officials say widening the freeway to 12 to 14 moveable lanes from the current eight lanes in most spots will prevent coastal highway gridlock. Construction is not scheduled to begin until 2014 at the earliest. Numerous state and federal agencies, including the California Coastal Commission, must approve the project. Voter-approved highway construction bonds and taxes are expected t fund much of the project, but it lacks complete funding for the estimated $4.5 billion in costs. Design and engineering work also must be completed. Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild opens "Fresh and Playful" exhibit saluting Sebastian Capella

Caltrans this month released data showing at least 40 properties along the North County coast would be removed under its Interstate 5 lane widening project proposal. Another 230 properties are on the partially endangered along the 27-mile widening route, which stretches from La Jolla to Oceanside. Easements could affect dozens more properties. Caltrans is required by law to pay fair market value for any seized properties, but officials this week acknowledged most properties potentially affected are outside Caltrans right-of-ways. That list of potentially affected properties -- displayed by parcel number -- is attached in pdf form here. Meanwhile, a coalition of community groups formed to oppose the lane widening project plans to meet at 7 p.m. Monday, Sept. 13 at Encinitas Community and Senior Center, 1140 Oakcrest Park Dr., Encinitas. Prevent Los Angeles Gridlock Usurping Environment (PLAGUE), Citizens Against Freeway Expansion (CAFÉ) and the Sierra Club host the meeting during which speakers will discuss environmental impacts, transportation alternatives and the legal aspects of expanding the freeway.
Commuter time drives now average 45 minutes from Oceanside to La Jolla, according to analysts and will increase to 90 minutes if no improvements are made to freeway logistics. Caltrans officials say widening the freeway to 12 to 14 moveable lanes from the current eight lanes in most spots will prevent coastal highway gridlock. Public comments were supposed to be closed Oct. 7. Many groups and government officials, including San Diego County Supervisor Pam Slater-Price, have called for Caltrans to extend the deadline, saying more time is needed to respond to the many details. Caltrans and federal highway officials were expected to decide how wide the expansion should be following the close of public comments. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Taxis? Does Solana Beach need those stinkin' taxis? Solana Beach City Council members on Wednesday, Sept. 8 passed an ordinance curbing taxi drivers behaving badly, allegedly. Residents and business owners are complaining taxi drivers scarf up too many parking spots in front of homes and business near the Cedros Avenue Coaster Station. To make matter worse, those darn taxi drivers have taken to gathering across the street from their cars, playing games, socializing, and -- goodness, gracious -- littering, according to complaints. Solana Beach staff say the local Sheriff’s Department has responded to nine, 911 calls over the past two years due to fighting, or arguing, among the drivers. Council members restricted cabs to the currently designated taxi parking zone with four spaces. Should those spaces be taken, the proposed ordinance would require drivers to keep moving. Officials may expand the number of spaces after driving around the area for six months. Taxi drivers may stop only to pick up passengers hailing them so long as it is safe, according to the ordinance. What's more, taxi drivers now must carry $1 million in liability insurance along with passengers, up from the previous $350,000 requirement. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A-OK, some good news; Quad City Fire Pact working great, officials say A shared fire management pact between firefighting agencies at Rancho Santa Fe, Del Mar, Solana Beach and Encinitas that went into effect last October is working well, agency chiefs said this week. With Rancho Santa Fe Fire providing lead management, local agencies have saved money while avoiding service duplications. Officials estimated the cooperative agreement had saved communities more than $164,000 in the last year. The cooperative agreement expires in October 2011. Encinitas Fire Chief Mark Muir said the cooperative agreement allowed firefighters who often must cross into neighboring communities to have consistent procedures. “It has really helped strengthen and unify and strengthen the working relationship among the four agencies,” said Rancho Santa Fe Fire Chief Nick Pavone. It took a bit of heat -- namely the 2003 regional fires and 2007 Witch Creek Fire -- to get everybody on the same page after years of discussions, according to sources. A failed November 2008 ballot measure that would have created a regional fire agency financed by a parcel tax also provided impetus for the local agreement, according to analysts. Del Mar Mayor Richard Earnest. and Solana Beach City Manager David Ott, a former fire chief, also went on record approving of the new cooperative arrangement. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 'Mission Accomplished' in Dolan-King battle, Rancho Santa Fe Association says After nearly 14 years and countless rounds of litigation and contention, the case is closed at last in 'Dolan-King,' the war that started over an 800-foot-long wrought iron fence on their property without Rancho Santa Fe Association Art Jury approval. (For a detailed look at the case, please view the attached pdf file from attorney Kelly G. Richardson.) Rancho Santa Fe Association officials on Sept. 3 completed sale of court-seized properties from Richard King and Patricia Dolan-King. After years of litigation, the association received about $330,000 -- they sought $500,000 -- to cover legal fees in addition to another $111,000 (including interest) they were owed and the case was considered closed, association officials said. "King" and his wife lived at the Rancho Santa Fe Covenant from 1996 until 2004. A lot came out during the years, mainly in the form of King-Dolan dirty laundry. King turned out to be a total fraud --his actual name was William Wallace Keegan. He eventually was sentenced to five concurrent life terms for his role in cocaine distribution rings that brought in to the U.S. at least 150 kilos of of Mexican coke, estimated street value of more than $2 million. The exhibit spans several venues, as artists were hanging their works for show earlier this week at the gallery, to be sure, but also at the Rancho Santa Fe Library, Morgan Stanley, Rancho Santa Fe Tennis Club and Wells Fargo Bank. The gallery per se features work by students of Sebastian Capella, a renowned contemporary Spanish artists of representational and coloristic techniques in oil painting.
