Moose No Longer Loose So Get Off Our Cloud and Return Those Damn Bronze and Iron Sculptures...OH THE HUMANITY STOP THESE HORRIBLE THEFT AND RETURN INCIDENTS!!!

(Photo: This moose is no longer loose after being returned "mysteriously" to its Ramona owner last weekend. In related stolen large outdoor sculpture matters, San Diego Sherriffs deputies said they were in hot pursuit of a Rancho Santa Fe bronze sculpture and Solana Beach iron-cast sculpture, and its absconders, also missing in action.)

Anybody around Rancho Santa Fe missing a giant outdoor bronze horse statue estinated to be worth $4,000? How about somebody at Solana Beach missing a cast-iron statue of undescribed nature estimated at $6,250?

You're not exactly in luck, but have no fear, sort of, the San Diego Sheriffs Department is on the case. Those tributes to the bronze and iron ages are being sought as a result of the mother lode of the entire set, a 600-pound bronze moose, suddenly showing up back at its pre-stolen home on the southwestern outskirts of Ramona.

A woman who had read a newspaper article about the statue's theft was visiting a popular equestrian area at Dye Road and Southern Oak Road in Ramona lnear sunset ast week and spotted the at-large moose, said Sgt. Christina Bavencoff of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The woman said she left the area for abut two hours. when she returned, lo-and-behold a 600-pound bronze moose at the same spot staring at her in a vacant field, according to Bavencoff.

"Sometime between 7 and 9 at night, a truck or a van or something probably pulled in to dump it off there," Bavencoff said. "Everybody's pretty much just baffled."

The moose vanished from a Ramona home in late February, and more than 17 other statues also had been stolen in recent months across the North County region. Among those were a cast-iron statue worth $6,250 stolen from its Solana Beach owner and a bronze horse statue worth $4,000 stolen from someone in Rancho Santa Fe.

Most of the thefts occurred within the last six months, she said.

Bavencoff said she had no idea whether the statues were being sold or scrapped or smuggled across the Mexican border.

However, she urged residents to be careful; while many of the statues were stolen from front yards, some were taken from backyards. Such an invasion could lead to violent confrontations between the thieves and surprised residents, she said.

Anyone with any information about how the moose traveled to the vacant field ---- or tips about any other statue theft ---- is asked to call the San Diego County Sheriff's Department at 858-565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club, Keeneland Forge Partnership for 2011 Season

Del Mar and Keeneland have announced a partnership for the 2011 season that the tracks hope will enhance and encourage horse ownership.

Keeneland, the Kentucky track that hosts two limited race meets and conducts public auctions, will team with its Southern California counterpart during Del Mar’s seaside summer meeting that runs this year from July 20-Sept. 7.

According to a release, Del Mar Thoroughbred Club’s assistance, Keeneland representatives will host several events both at Del Mar and nearby sites for potential new owners and their guests over the course of the seven-week season.

“The purpose of the hospitality events will be to explain and expedite entry into the Thoroughbred racing game, especially through use of a high-end, high-potential avenue such as the Keeneland sales,” the release stated.

“Building interest in Thoroughbred ownership is crucial to our sport,” said Keeneland president and CEO Nick Nicholson. “One of the best ways to generate interest among potential new owners is to give them the opportunity to see and experience the beauty of Thoroughbred racing up close. The high caliber of racing, coupled with its outstanding hospitality and scenic backdrop, make Del Mar the ideal partner for the Keeneland sales.”

Keeneland’s efforts will be noted in stakes tie-ins, on-site signage and TV promotional spots, the track’s program, and in its horsemen’s publications.

“Keeneland is a natural ally and a long-standing friend of Del Mar,” said Craig Fravel, DMTC’s president and general manager. “For us to work together to try to bring new people into our exciting game of racing makes sense from start to finish.”

As it has for the past two years, Del Mar will race on a five-day-per-week basis from Wednesdays through Sundays. First post on most days is at 2 p.m.

OH THE HUMANITY!!! Dump truck Ditches Del Dios Highway, Calif. Morning Rush Hour Traffic...

Just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, and just in time for morning rush hour, a dump truck overturned on Del Dios Highway near Lake Hodges Dam, Ranch Santa Fe firefighters said.

Maybe, the dump truck driver was watching the waterfalls continuing at the dam. Maybe, those stinking dump trucks shouldn't be allowed on narrow, two-lane Del Dios Highway where they spew pollution, clog up traffic and, yes, even overturn and truly turn the highway into a nightmare, especially at rush hour.

But we digress.

Del Dios Highway was CLOSED, closed we tell ya, from 8 to 9 a.m. so a lot of people didn't get to -- Maynard G. Krebs voice, please --  "work". But gee whiz, no injuries, so that's, er, nice, we guess.

The dastardly dump truck -- its ownership not revealed -- had been towing a small flatbed trailer with a tractor. That's just the worst kind of traffic possible on the misnamed highway because these stinking trucks and trailer go like 30 miles per hour under the speed limit. They also don't turn off when a long line of vehicles is behind them and technically, the law says it's illegal to drive with five vehicles, or more, in the rear.

ANYWAY, Firefighters found the truck and erstwhile trailer lying on its side on the guard rail along the lane headed from Rancho Santa Fe to Del Dios.

Taxpayer dollars came to work then.

Aside from the Rancho Santa Fe Fire engine company and San Diego Medical Services ambulance and crew, San Diego County Department of Public Works employees cleaned up the road while California Highway Patrol officers told people they couldn't drive anywhere.

The accident remains under investigation with no charges filed as yet, said Julie Taber, Rancho Santa Fe Fire spokesperson.

Oh, the humanity!

(By the way, photo below, the waterfall event is coming to a close at Lake Hodges Dam where the one month-long attraction was enjoyed by one and all.)

How 'Bout That Weather Dudes? KSWB-TV's Loren Nancarrow gets hailed around Encinitas virally while Chrissy Russo takes a stab at it (as usual)...

Seriously, the weather has been wacky. Why not tell it like it is? Blame the supersized moon or climate change, but here's a Thursday look at what the hell is happening around here lately.  Fox 5/69, KSWB-TV's Loren Nancarrow captured the Wednesday hail storm real-time by Belly-Up Tavern, Cedros Design District, Solana Beach, Calif. 92075, Earth, Milky Way, Space, Wherever. In a related clip, KSWB's Chrissy Russo kind of discusses stuff including, you know, like there's more rain, and things, coming like soon.

Devo Rocks Belly-Up This Week. Video At Right Now...Michael Pilmer/Devo-Obsesso Reporting

DEVO performs "Uncontrollable Urge" in Solana Beach, CA - 3/20/11. Video shot by Michael Pilmer/Devo-Obsesso. For more visit here or contact michael@devo-obsesso.com.

DEVO's lyrics exposed me to a whole new way of thinking when I was in my teens, and helped me snake through the chaos of Planet Earth. I realized that there was an escape from being caught up in what I saw going on around me, another way of thinking that made more sense. I saw the light - We're ALL Devo.

I was able to meet the members of DEVO way back in the mid 1990's, and helped them with a few graphic projects as a hobby in those days. I now work for DEVO, Inc. on an official basis, and maintain several DEVO-related sites: Devo-Obsesso.com (of course),Club DEVO (Official DEVO site), DEVO's Myspace Page,Mutato Muzika's web site, & Mark Mothersbaugh's Art Gallery Tours.

DEVO AT BELLY-UP

“Thirty years ago, people said that we were cynical, that we had a bad attitude,” says Devo’s Mark Mothersbaugh. “But now, when you ask people if de-evolution is real, they understand that there was something to what we were saying. It’s not the kind of thing you want to see proven right, but it does make it easier to talk about.”

“The world is in sync with Devo,” says his band-mate and co-writer Gerald Casale. “We’re not the guys who freak people out and scare them—we’re like the house band on the Titanic, entertaining everybody as we go down.”

And so, now is the time. More than three decades after the release of its visionary debut, Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo, and a full 20 years since its last studio album, Devo is back with the aptly titled Something for Everybody. The long rumored, wildly anticipated album (which was launched with a memorable performance in Vancouver at the Winter Olympics) features the band’s classic line-up—Mark and Bob Mothersbaugh, Gerald and Bob Casale—joined by drummer Josh Freese (Nine Inch Nails, Guns n’ Roses). Produced by Greg Kurstin (The Bird & The Bee), the album also includes contributions from John Hill and Santi White (better known as hip-hop star Santigold), John King of the Dust Brothers, and the Teddybears.

Though the 12 songs on Something for Everybody are built on Devo’s signature mechanized swing, the recording and presentation of the album saw the band experimenting with an entirely new approach. Greg Scholl was brought in to serve as COO for Devo, Inc., and—working with the advertising agency Mother LA—conducted a series of studies through the www.clubdevo.com site to help the band with its creative decisions, from color selection to song mixes.

“We decided to actively seek comment and criticism from outside people and use that as a tool, rather than shunning or ignoring it,” says Gerald Casale. “Our experiences participating in secondary creativity—things like corporate consensus building, focus groups—make you appreciate the connection that an artist has to society.”

“In the past, Devo was very insular,” says Mark Mothersbaugh. “This time, I became intrigued with the idea of having people who understood Devo actually work on the songs, and to do to our songs what we did to ‘Satisfaction’ on our first record. Don’t put any boundaries on their production style, let them bring what they needed to make Devo be what it should be after waking up from suspended animation for 20 years.”

His revelation came when the Teddybears did a remix of the song “Watch Us Work It,” an idea initiated by the Mother agency. “They took Josh Freese’s drums off and put on a sample from something we did back in, like, 1982. And I thought, ‘That actually is better!’ That was when I first really saw that Devo had something to absorb, as well as something to impart.”

Certainly Devo has had plenty to convey since Gerald Casale founded the group in Akron, Ohio, in 1973. The band was an extension of a multi-media exploration of the concept that mankind’s progress had ceased, and the process of de-evolution had begun. Devo’s early work caught the attention of such icons as Neil Young and David Bowie, and, with such hits as “Whip It” and “Girl U Want,” and the accompanying, revolutionary music videos, the group became one of the defining acts of the 1980s.

Devo’s sound, style, and philosophy have been an influence on artists from Rage Against the Machine to Lady Gaga. Kurt Cobain once said, “Of all the bands who came from the underground and actually made it in the mainstream, Devo is the most challenging and subversive of all.”

In 1990, Devo morphed from a recording and concert act to putting more focus on individual pursuits and various creative enterprises. Mark Mothersbaugh, along with brother Bob, and Bob Casale, began making music for films and television, working on Pee-Wee’s Playhouse and Rugrats and the movies of Wes Anderson. Gerald Casale directed scores of commercials and music videos for the likes of Miller Lite Beer and Mrs. Butterworth’s to Rush, The Foo Fighters, and Soundgarden respectively. (“Everything we’ve done outside of Devo is basically a permutation on the theme we started with,” says Mark Mothersbaugh.) Meanwhile, Devo’s music remained a staple in movies, commercials, and videogames.

After appearing sporadically in concert and working on 2006’s Devo 2.0 project—with kids providing the vocals to Devo songs—the band began the stop-and-start project of making new music. “It was now or never,” says Gerald Casale. “We’re all still alive, and we can all play and sing—probably better than we ever did in the past. These new songs, like ’Don’t Shoot (I’m a Man)’ or ‘What We Do,’ are as Devo as anything Devo has ever done.”

Especially notable on Something for Everybody is the focus its songs bring to the vapid absurdity of so much contemporary speech (don’t miss the closing wail of “Don’t tase me, bro!” on “Don’t Shoot”). Mark Mothersbaugh points out that, for all the attention usually given to Devo’s funky robot sound, this has always been a central aspect of its work.

“We grew up in a time when we saw hippies become hip capitalists, when the real punks truly destroyed themselves, and we came to the conclusion that rebellion was obsolete,” he says. “We saw subversion as the most successful form of change, so we always had an attraction to loaded phrases that you can reshape and subvert to fit your own needs.”

Gerald Casale adds that Devo really was looking at today’s world when writing the new songs. “The tautology of a line like ‘What we do is what we do’ is taken straight from hip-hop,” he says. “And words like ‘bro’ and ’dude’—we’re surrounded by it all the time, 20-year-olds don’t even see any irony in it anymore.”

A Devo for our times. A band that evolves, even as the world around them confirms the decay they have long suspected. With Something for Everybody, Devo has gained from experience, honed its attack, and stands ready to sound the alarm for another generation.

“As angry young men who have been validated, we have the possibility to do something that resonates like it did back in the early days,” says Mark Mothersbaugh. “It’s the same car, just now with air bags, power brakes, and steering.”

“We’re inspired by reality,” says Gerald Casale, “because the world is so ridiculous and stupid. DE-EVOLUTION IS REAL.”

Bird Gave the Word, Died a Hero En Fuego in Rancho Bernardo Apartment Fire on Tuesday...

A Rancho Bernardo family's goffin cockatoo died Tuesday after his squawking alerted them to a fire from which they were able to escape.

About 30 firefighters responded, including units from Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego, Escondido, and Poway. Firefights took about an hour to put out the fire, which had spread to the attic of the two-story condo, authorities said.

The cockatoo, alas, apparently died a hero. It was last seen en fuego in the laundry room of the family's condominium at 17487 Bernardo Center Dr., said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque.

The bird would have turned 2 years old on Wednesday, Luque said.

"He's the only reason we got out," said the owner, who didn't want to be identified, in tears as a friend comforted her.

The call came in just before 10 a.m. of a fire at the four-unit complex near the library. The woman was at home with her infant when she heard her cockatoo squawking in an unusual manner, Luque said. When the woman went into the laundry room, where the bird usually stayed in its cage, she noticed the bird was on fire and tried to put it out with an extinguisher but was unable to, Luque said.

The woman, whose husband was out jogging, then fled the home with the baby and firefighters arrived to put out the blaze. The fire spread up a chase outside the unit and into a neighboring condominium. The neighbor was not home at the time, Luque said.

Three, or four, people were evacuated from the building and no one was injured. Officials estimated the apartment complex damage at  $750,000. An investigator said the fire may have started when the furnace ignited combustibles, but the cause tentativey was listed as accidental.

Breaking news 4 p.m. -- It's Friday, why is stuff always happening to make traffic worse?

Just some kind of bad moon rising, or doublemoon or whatever you calls it. A vehicle fire just past Via de la Valle at Interstate 5 around 3:30 p.m. reduced already slowing Friday p.m. drive-times to a robust 15 to 20 miles per hour from Del Mar Heights Road north to Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas. Don't expect to hit 60 mph until just before Carlsbad where it then slows down again before the Highway 78 interchange.

Other worries earlier this afternoon included a hit-and-run accident at Carmel Valley Road by the freeway exchanges. For CHP details on each hassle, see below:

Most Profitable Keywords In Real Estate: Rancho Santa Fe Blah Blah Village Homes for Sale...For more from Daniel Beer visit GeekEstate Blog here...

The sign says it all for luxury home sales at Crosby Estate where all the streets are named after classic Bing Crosby tunes.

I have been networking with agents over the last few weeks about marketing their business online.  Despite the fact that they all came from different backgrounds, ages, genders, and just about anything else you could think of, there was one commonality amongst them all, which I find problematic.  Each one of them said their primary goal was to rank for the keyword “San Diego real estate”.

Why do I see that as a problem?  Because I am concerned that they are about to spend too much time and money on achieving a high ranking for a keyword that will not only be incredibly difficult to obtain, but isn’t even among the most profitable keywords available.

Profitable keywords imply an action.  San Diego real estate implies nothing.  It is just a thing.  San Diego real estate for sale implies an action.  People want something that is for sale, presumably so they can buy it.  Component #1:  Action.

It is natural to think that a keyword as broad and generic as San Diego real estate is going to be the most profitable due to the shear search volume.  However, the truth is that the most powerful keywords are far more focused and have less search volume.  They may be something like Rancho Santa Fe homes for sale.  Rancho Santa Fe is one of the most beautiful areas in San Diego County.  Somebody that searches Rancho Santa Fe homes for sale is far more focused in on what they want and therefore far more likely to take action and buy.

But the more focused approach doesn’t end there.  Even better than Rancho Santa Fe homes for sale would be something more focused.  Something like Rancho Santa Fe Farms homes for sale, Fairbanks Ranch homes for sale, The Bridges homes for sale, or Rancho Santa Fe Covenant homes for sale.  These are all individual neighborhoods within Rancho Santa Fe. People that type keywords like these into the search engines know exactly what they are looking for.

Sure, they have far less search traffic, but the leads you convert from keywords like these are buyers or sellers that are laser focused and are just searching to find a relevant resource that they can rely on.  You can be that resource.  Component #2: Laser Focused Keywords.

1 + 1 = Success

Put component 1 and 2 together and you have an ultra profitable keyword formula.  Best of all it is easier to rank for these keywords than any of their more competitive, yet less effective generic counterparts.   Not only that, but because these people know what they want you will end up spending less time showing them around all over town while they figure it out.  Profits and efficiency all at once.  Beautiful.

Build a page for each neighborhood that you would like to work in and focus your SEO toward action oriented people that know what they are looking for.  You will reap the rewards.

Surfrider Foundation Solana Beach says don't pollute beaches with your butts, fools...

The Surfrider Foundation wants to put in ASHCANS!!! as part of the “Hold-On-To-Your-Butt” campaign. People have put in more than 100 cylinder ash cans at Cardiff, Carlsbad, Ocean Beach, Pacific Beach, Mission Beach, and La Jolla. Point Loma, Hillcrest and Imperial Beach are communities awaiting ASHCANS FOR STINKY, POLLUTING CIGARETTE BUTTS WHAT IS THE OCEAN YOUR PERSONAL ASHTRAY soon.

Hold On To Your Butt
For the most current 'HOTYB' info visit our blog: www.holdontoyourbutt.blogspot.com

Cigarette butts are the most littered item in The United States and the world. This type of litter is not just found on streets and in urban settings; the number of cigarette butts found on beaches and nearby areas is overwhelming--typically accounting for nearly one in every three items collected during our cleanups. Cigarette waste discarded miles inland compounds the problem as it can end up in stormdrains that flow to streams, rivers, bays, lagoons and ultimately the ocean. To make matters worse, lighted cigarette butts flicked into California’s dry arid environment can spark deadly and costly wildfires.

Hold Onto Your Butt Awareness Day this summer will involve activists, volunteers, and friends of the environment gathering at three of San Diego County's busiest traffic intersections near the beach. There, Surfrider activists will hold signs, pass out personal ashtrays, stickers and graphically demonstrate to motorists the problem that we are so concerned about. We will encourage motorists and beachgoers to dispose of cigarettes safely, and explain that cigarette butts thrown on the ground can eventually end up in the ocean and affect marine life, including surfers and swimmers. Volunteers will also clean the surrounding area, keeping track of how many cigarette butts and other items they find.

Our Chapter, along with American Lung Association, the American Heart Association and other organizations fighting cigarette litter, held a press conference with the Californian Highway Patrol (CHP) and San Diego Fire Department to announce that the CHP is cracking down on smokers who throw their butts out the car window while driving. The CHP joined our coalition efforts by setting up a hotline number that people can call if they see cigarette butts being tossed onto our streets and highways. After the phone call is received, the CHP will send a warning letter to the alleged violator. The hotline number, 1-877-211-BUTT, has already been successful! Our Chapter has been working on our Hold On To Your Butt campaign for years and we are delighted to be part of such a broad-based coalition.

DID YOU KNOW?

  • Hold On To Your Butt Day, 2004Cigarette butts are the most littered item in The United States and the world.
    • Over two billion cigarette butts get tossed everyday. That's an average of two cigarette butts daily from each of earth's 1.2 billion smokers.
    • It is estimated that Americans toss more than 175 million pounds of cigarette butts out every year. These butts are frequently cast onto the sidewalk and streets and then pushed into storm drains that flow to streams, rivers, bays, lagoons and ultimately the ocean.
    • At beach cleanups, cigarette butts are the most common form of trash found (typically accounting for one in every five items collected).
    • The cigarette filter was designed to trap the toxic chemicals in the cigarette smoke from entering the smoker's body. When submerged in water, the toxic chemicals trapped in the filter leak out into aquatic ecosystems, threatening the quality of the water and many forms of aquatic life.
    • Cigarette butts may seem small, but with an estimated 4.5 trillion butts (worldwide) littered every year, the toxic chemicals add up!
    • Over 99% of cigarettes are now smoked outside.
    • 18% of all litter dropped to the ground is washed into streams, rivers, lakes and the ocean by storm water runoff. Cigarette butts, are little and lightweight and are the first to get carried away into our waterways.0
    • Studies indicate that since we have enacted indoor smoking bans, more cigarette butts are being tossed directly into the environment. Unfortunately, this means that ecosystems have a higher chance of being affected by cigarette butts. Biologists have found butts in the stomachs of young birds, sea turtles and other marine creatures.
    • Cigarette butts can cause other environmental problems, such as fires. For example, a cigarette butt was the possible cause of an 11,000 acre fire in San Diego in January 2001.
    • Many smokers incorrectly believe that cigarette filters are made of biodegradable cotton. In fact, cigarette filters are made of plastic cellulose acetate, and can take 15 years to decompose.
Ultimately, the Surfrider Foundation is calling for better enforcement of laws against cigarette butt littering; additional taxes on tobacco products specifically earmarked for clean-up efforts; more effort on the part of tobacco companies to improve the biodegradability of filters, reduce packaging waste and educate consumers about the impacts of tobacco waste on the environment; and more local involvement from governments and businesses to reduce cigarette littering by supplying ashtrays and other "disposal mechanisms" at building entrances.

Tracy EmblemTakes on Nukes: America Should Reconsider its Bail-out of the Nuclear Power Industry...

America Should Reconsider its Bail-out of the Nuclear Power Industry

No new nuclear power plants have been built in the United States since the late 1970's.

However, in 2009, Senator Lamar Alexander from Tennessee unveiled his blueprint to build 100 nuclear power plants within the next 20 years.  Even with the nuclear power plant crisis unfolding in Japan, the senator insists that nuclear energy is safe and continues to call on the federal government to guarantee loans for nuclear power plants with tax payer dollars.

According to the Institute for Southern Studies, the nuclear industry has spent at least $640 million lobbying during the last decade.

Although there are several deep budget cuts proposed for social and environmental programs, President Obama has budgeted another $36 billion dollars in loan guarantees even though the nuclear industry should be seeking private marketplace financing for new construction. This amounts to a bailout for the nuclear industry.

The federal guarantees were first authorized by Congress in 2005. The New York Times reports that "a one-sentence provision" was buried in the energy bill and inserted without debate at the urging of the nuclear power industry, making nuclear plants classified as clean energy and eligible for tens of billions of dollars in government loan guarantees.

Apparently the lessons learned from the 1986 Chernobyl power plant reactor meltdown that caused the worst nuclear accident in history were forgotten. In the United States in 1979, we almost had a partial meltdown at Three Mile Island but the reactor was brought under control just in time.

With the meltdown of nuclear reactors in Japan, our government leaders, charged with protecting the health and safety of our citizens, should carefully evaluate the risks of nuclear power plants.

No matter how the industry spins it, nuclear power is not safe and will never be until the waste problem is solved. Thirty years later, we have not solved the dilemma of storing nuclear waste or the problem of what to do with the weapons-grade plutonium. It only takes about 18 pounds of plutonium to build a nuclear weapon.

In the United States, more than 60,000 metric tons of nuclear waste is stored in temporary storage facilities at 131 civilian and military sites around the country. The current storage solutions are only expected to last 100 years, while nuclear waste can remain lethal for 100,000 years or more.  The government has no long term plan to store the waste and insure the waste does not remain an environmental hazard.

We must also consider the weapons proliferation risk in an age of transnational terrorism in addition to the risk of an environmental accident. These are just some reasons why we must adopt alternative renewable energy standards and use renewable energy sources rather than build 100 more nuclear power plants.

In the United States, a conservative solution is to invest in clean energy sources that do not pose risks inherent in nuclear energy production and storage. These sources include creating bio-energy from plant matter or animal waste. For example, in Northern California, Pacific Gas and Electric Company and BioEnergy Solutions are building an innovative bio-gas project in Fresno County to deliver renewable natural gas derived from animal waste, reducing the carbon footprint at its source.

In San Diego, San Diego Gas and Electric Company has announced a partnership in a wind project on the Campo reservation using renewable energy. This month SDG&E also announced a 25-year contract to generate solar energy from a proposed 1,057-acre solar energy facility near El Centro which would create almost 300 construction jobs in a two-year period.

Rather than subsidizing nuclear power plants or off-shore drilling, an alternative approach is needed. Using concentrated solar energy we could power the entire United States annually.  The public already owns the right-away along the state and interstate highways. It does not take a lot of imagination to conceive of a solar-electric array 100 feet wide and 100 miles long, or any number of miles. Since the highways pass through cities that need electricity we would have connectivity where every American could see their tax dollars at work.

While those in favor of building nuclear power plants argue that nuclear energy is inexpensive, they have not factored in the costs and risks associated with the building and maintenance of storage facilities for the nuclear waste or the cost to our people's health and the environment if there is a problem with the nuclear reactors.  If they had to factor in the cost of insurance to pay for these risks, nuclear energy would not be inexpensive.

America should have vision. Consequently, the United States should consider phasing out its nuclear power plants over the next generation and begin investing in other safer renewable energy sources. We can lead the world in clean energy technology.

Getting the Flavor of Del Mar

THE PLACE:  FLAVOR DEL MAR, 1555 Camino Del Mar, 3rd Floor

THE VIBE:  Vacation perfect ocean view wonderful, hip and trendy

THE COST:  Lunch is moderate, dinner entrees around $30

I was stumbling around Del Mar the other weekend looking for a new place to eat.  I love going out to lunch but have to fight the urge to go to the same old places.  A while back there was a place called Epizote in the Del Mar Plaza. It had a spectacular ocean view but that was about it.  Gone.  In it's place is the new Flavor Del Mar, a hip new place that's been getting a lot of buzz. I checked out their menu and saw these magic words:  HAPPY HOUR ALL DAY SUNDAY!  Beers on tap for $3, small plates for $6, a sunny table for two in front, I'm in!

So check this one out.  It's a steamed Chinese bun typically used for Peking Duck but topped with a crispy pork piece and a zesty hoisin sauce and Asian slaw.  Man oh man, was this good and at only $6, a steal!

Next up was the lunch entree lobster roll ($14), served on a hot dog bun and with house made chips.  This was so good I almost cried.  Let's go in for a closer look.

Look, it's not smothered in mayonaise or surrounded by fillers.  This lobster was fresh and delicious, pour a bit of that drawn butter on top and it's pure heaven.  The house made chips were good, too, though a touch overdone for me.  But who cares, that lobster, that lobster!!  Look, you want one of these.  Don't even look at the rest of the menu, get this!

So the next day I was thinking about how good the food was at Flavor and had a bright idea - let's go there for dinner!  No argument on that one.

Before we get to the food, I love fancy cocktails.  I had a Tangerine Jalapeño made with peligroso añejo tequila, cointreau, tangerine, lime, housemade jalapeño purée, and finished with a chili-lime salt rim.  So good, so dangerous, but so delicious with the peppery overtones mixing with the sweetness, a perfect balance.

The meal started with some rustic bread and various salts to top them with.  I know, I've been a skeptic on the idea of fancy salts but this was so good that guess who now has his own jars of fancy salts at home?  You know.  Anyway, each salt was different, one was Chinese Five Spiced, one was crunchy, you get the idea.

Next up was the Butternut Squash soup.  OK, I usually don't care for this but I was gushing all over this one.  No cream used, don't ask me how they got it so creamy but really a perfect start.  But wait, there's more!

Beef Carpaccio, aka raw beef, with a quail egg and capers and man more of that crunchy salt!  Super good delicious.

Recently I ragged on Island Prime.  Not only was the food expensive and not that special but the waiter was a huge dufus, a college kid who when asked for a recommendation would refer back to the menu and read you the options.  At Flavor the waiter was actually knowledgeable!  He knew wines!  He knew foods!  He had opinions when asked "what do you think of this dish paired with this wine?" and unbelievably steered my wife away from the expensive scallops and towards what appeared to be the token pasta dish.  Crazy??

Homemade pasta with mushrooms and a hint of truffles, do I have to tell you that this dish blew me away?  The texture was perfect, the flavors perfect, and though it's the cheapest thing on the menu it might be one of the best pastas I've ever had.

Before you go WHAT IS THAT, A SQUIRREL BRAIN? I have to remind you that this restaurant is really dark so taking food photos is really tough!  I had to turn on the flash and bother everyone around me (the things I do for you guys) and as every food photographer knows, flash is the kiss of death to good food shots.  So NO, that's not a squirrel brain or a goat liver but a veal cheek (see, that's better, right?) on top of pork belly and duck confit and gnocci and.... wow, just taste it and shut up!  And the waiter was right, it paired very nicely with the wine.

So there you go, a new place to go eat at!  Flavor Del Mar has to rank right up there with some of the best restaurants in San Diego.  If lately you've been going to the same old places, do yourself a favor and go to Flavor.  Hey, nice rhyme!

Rancho Santa Fe Patrol warns of magazine sales scam going around town - Better Business Bureau offers more information and tips...

This just in from the Rancho Santa Fe Patrol:

"Over the years we have encountered young adults going door to door selling magazine subscriptions.

One of the ruses is to tell you that they represent a local sports team- like soccer or baseball.

Or, they may say that the neighbor  "the Smith's" down the street just gave me some money......  (that's because they just read their name sign out front......)  They are very slick in their approach.

Well a new batch of solicitors are going door to to door in neighboring areas- here is some info from the Sheriff's Dept. :

"Magazine sales scam in San Diego County are being reported to law enforcement. Several students from Cal State San Marcos have been victimized, one for over $500.00 cash in Vista. There were a call from Escondido as well. The Reporting Parties are reporting that part of the ruse is that they are part of project/class with Cal State San Marcos and/or San Diego State. Report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff's Department @ 858-565-5200.

Door to door vendors have to have permits issued by the Sheriff.  They have to be visible and backed up by another legitimate form of ID.  Church groups are exempt.  Our suggestion is not to give anything to door to door vendors.  If you want to donate money, ask them to send you something in the mail.  That way you will have time to look it over and decide if it is legitimate.  They should have a Federal Tax ID number.

Sometimes these solicitors are crooks looking for a way into your house or "casing the  place".

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns that deceptive door-to-door magazine sales crews are hitting the pavement and looking to earn a quick buck.

Many magazine publishing companies employ crews of high school and college-age people who are trying to earn money over the summer. These crews are sent to communities to knock on doors and sell magazine subscriptions. While there are many legitimate door-to-door magazine sellers and companies, it is important to be aware that there are also scammers on the prowl.

Door-to-door magazine crews often claim in their sales pitch that they live in or near your neighbourhood and that by purchasing a magazine subscription through them, you will a) help them to get their lives back on track, b) raise money on behalf of a charity, c) raise money to pay for school or d) fund a school trip.

In many instances, these claims are true, but in the case where a scammer is at work, the sales representative may be working to dupe you out of hundreds of dollars in fake magazine subscriptions, usually paid for via a personal cheque written directly to the sales rep.

In reports recently received by the BBB, customers allege that door-to-door magazine sales reps took their cheque for an annual subscription, but that their magazines never arrived. Other victims allege that the sales rep used high pressure or misrepresentative sales tactics and that “students” lied about living in the neighbourhood or attending the nearby school.
Customers aren’t the only victims of this scam. Unscrupulous employers have been known to dupe young salespeople into fraudulently misrepresenting themselves and the subscription sales package. In some cases, young sales crews have been forced to work long hours, endure substandard living conditions and had their wages withheld.

BBB offers the following tips to avoid being scammed by a door-to-door magazine sales rep:

    * If someone arrives at your door offering you a magazine subscription ask him or her questions like: Where are you from? Who do you work for? How are you paid? How did you get involved with the magazine company? Use common sense and listen to your gut instinct.

    * Don’t fall victim to high-pressure sales tactics. If you are interested in a subscription, but need some time to decide, ask the sales representative to return later. Do some comparison-shopping and research first to see if the subscription offer is legitimate and of any real value.

    * Always research the magazine publishing company with your Better Business Bureau (vi.bbb.org) before filling out a cheque for a magazine subscription.

    * Never write a cheque directly to a sales rep.

    * Get a copy of the subscription order and a receipt. Make sure there is contact information for the company included.

    * Know your cancellation rights. In direct (door-to-door) sales over $50, you have a 10-day right to cancel. If you decide to cancel, mail a notice of cancellation to the supplier within 10 days by registered mail. This 10-day “cooling off period” does not apply to purchases or service contracts concluded at a place of business.

Victims of fraudulent magazine sales can file a complaint with their Better Business Bureau.

    Paradise (Grill) in Del Mar?

HE PLACE:  PARADISE GRILL (Flower Hill Mall, Del Mar / web)

    THE VIBE:  Feels like Maui

    THE FOOD:  Island Influenced

THE PRICES:  Wide range from $15 burgers to $29 filets

    Weird...

Ever get that strange feeling of deja vu?  Well, I got it the second I stepped into Paradise Grill in Del Mar's Flower Hill shopping mall.  It's taken me a long time to stop in because 1) I hate the parking at Flower Hill Mall, and 2) I hate wandering around Flower Hill Mall looking for any shop that is the least bit interesting.  But as fate would have it, there I was - impatiently waiting for a giant SUV to leave.  HURRY UP!!!

Back to that deja vu thing again.  Once inside Paradise Grill I was reminded of any number of restaurants on Maui.  Wow, am I at Kimo's?  Wait, no, this is David Paul's!  No wait, ahhh, Hula Grill, right?  Now look, I didn't say that's a bad thing.  In fact, I felt like I was on vacation and God knows I need a vacation.  But let's order up some food.  What's that?  Duck Confit tacos?  I love duck confit.  I love tacos.  How can it miss?

But miss it did.  The duck was uninspired, like generic meat and lacking any real duck confitiness.  And the fries, well you know I love fries.  But I HATE IT when they serve cold fries.

Really, if McDonalds can get it right then a real restaurant should too.  Let me try my Gordon Ramsy impression:  "WHAT THE HELL, THEY'RE ^%$#$ BLOODY COLD, SEND IT BACK!!!"  Overall, I'd have to give this dish a C-.

Next up was the Firecracker Shrimp, deep fried crispy with a sweet and spicy sauce.  And guess what, it was scorching hot like they actually just cooked it when we ordered it.  And guess what again?  It was THE BOMB, delicious and well executed.  Nicely done!

So the final verdict?  I love the atmosphere and setting, and the shrimp made up for the lousy tacos, so I have to give this one a solid B.  If you're stuck trying to think of a place to go for lunch or dinner that feels like vacation but doesn't cost like one, then Paradise Grill might be the ticket. Just don't get the tacos.

Oh yeah, almost forgot - here's a two for one coupon so you can get a double order of that shrimp and not worry if someone wants a taste.  That's my plan for next time.

Del Mar's Preston Vorlicek Sez: Fairgrounds purchase a 'Game Changer' for Del Mar

The purchase of the Fairgrounds will be a true “game changer” for the City of Del Mar. The City would take responsibility for the operation of a $60,000,000 gambling and entertainment business. To put things in perspective, this is more than six times the current general fund revenues (revenues used to provide for the general operation of the City).

While many people have been talking about the possible benefits of such a purchase (local/regional control), few people have been talking about the financial details and implications of such a purchase. Fortunately, the 22nd District Agricultural Association (DAA) has provided us the latest audited financial statements for the years of 2007, 2008 and 2009. Management discussion and extensive financial details are provided in the statements. I have offered to send the actual report to anyone who is interested (email me at preston.vorlicek@gmail.com).

First reported here Dec. 15, Rancho Santa Fe Fire Dept. announces offices moving to Cielo...

As first reported at Ah-Ha Rancho Santa Fe News on Dec. 15 -- http://tiny.cc/wosqo -- and officially announced Wednesday, March 2, the Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District is moving offices to Cielo Village off Del Dios Highway.

The 6,000-square foot office building at 18027 Calle Ambiente, was purchased, and renovated, at an undisclosed price. it will house administrative personnel and firefighters, and open for business on March 29, said Julie Taber, district information officer in a news release.

"Beginning March 29, customers seeking assistance with plan submissions, plan checks, car seat installations, accounts payable, and other administrative or prevention matters will need to go to the new office on Calle Ambiente," Taber said.

Said Fire Chief Tony Michel. “The new location will allow us to maintain a high level of service for our customers and accommodate the growing needs of our district. While we anticipate a smooth transition, we appreciate the community’s understanding should there be a bump or two along the way.”

Emergency response personnel assigned to RSF Fire Station 1,  located at the district's current  El Fuego headquarters, will remain at the current site, Taber said.

In December, (photo, left, of building then) when Ah-Ha RSF News broke the story, Michel said: "We are purchasing a building that is being built to suit. This gives us more room for growth and solves our parking issues."

The new office is somewhat larger than the current facility, and more central to total operations in the district tat includes Rancho Santa Fe, 4S Ranch, and Del Dios, according to Michel. He would not disclose the building purchase price, pending conclusion of negotiations between fire district leaders and Cielo management. A postal store at the building was relocated to another Cielo location.

The new location is just across the street from the department's Station No. 4, which was the department's newest station, constructed in 2004 at the Cielo entrance, 18040 Calle Ambiente. That station covers the district's northeast corner.

That's not all for district moves. The rebuilt Fairbanks Ranch Fire Station continues on schedule for a May opening. "The contracted completion date of May 2011 is still on schedule pending any unforeseen delays," fire officials said.

The Rancho Santa Fe Fire Protection District was formed on Oct. 14, 1946 under an order adopted by the County Board of Supervisors. At the time, the Fire District was comprised of one Chief and 15 volunteer suppression personnel who protected an estimated 3,800 residents.

The District now spans 38-square miles and protects about 26,000 residents. The fire agency also operates under a cooperative efforts agreement with the Encinitas, Del Mar, and Solana Beach Fire Departments.

The Fire District is governed by a five-person elected Board of Directors. The Board is responsible for establishing policies, guidelines and providing direction for Fire District staff. Board meetings are held the second Wednesday of each month at 1:00 p.m.

Quickies: Bilbray to Bardella to Issa, Dog Beach pot bust, San Pasqual Academy fundraiser...

Hot potato among North County GOP congressmen: Bilbray to Issa to Bilbray to Issa to national news -- The Kurt Bardella story

O.K., this is it for Vista Congressman Darrell Issa news this month, and we're only bringing it up because this also involves Brian Bilbray, your 50th Congressional District representative.

As has been reported by Politico, CNN and across the nation today, Issa canned former Bilbray press official Kurt Bardella, 27, who was earning $106,000 annually as Issa's deputy communications director. To wit:

"House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Darrell Issa (R-CA) fired one of the most prominent press secretaries on Capitol Hill today for improperly sharing reporters' emails with the New York Times' Mark Leibovich in connection with a book that the reporter is writing. The news that the committee was looking into Kurt Bardella's actions was first reported last night by Politico."

Actually, Bilbray and Issa have been staff-sharing for a while now. Bardella went from Bilbray's employ, to Issa's House Oversight Committee back to Bilbray, then back to Issa, all within a period of four years.

"The 27-year-old Bardella had a very unconventional style for a press secretary on Capitol Hill. The idea for most press secretaries is to make their boss the complete focus out front and work to control things behind the scenes. Bardella always seemed to enjoy being right out there with Issa, spoke very informally with his boss, and has been mentioned in the major profiles of the chairman -- which is highly unusual.

"The Times called Kurt Bardella Issa's 'mini-me.' And a recent New Yorker profile of Issa raised eyebrows among the Capitol Hill press corps when Bardella told the reporter that "some people in the press, I think, are just lazy as hell."

No word on Bardella's future although Bilbray obviously has first dibs.

Dog Beach, Del Mar 3 a.m. Tuesday: Book 'em Danno...

Any night owls around Dog Beach early Tuesday may have gotten lucky, except the darn Border Patrol got in the way.

Border Patrol agents arrested two men on a panga boat -- that's a small skiff used primarily in Mexico and Central America -- along with 399 pounds of marijuana in 26 bundles.

About once a blue moon it seems, marijuana washes up around Dog Beach as smugglers attempt to take the loads on shore.

Agents saw the boat around 3 a.m near La Jolla., then followed its progress to Del Mar before lowering the boom.

The men were identified as Mexican national ages 28 and 41. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement took custody of the men.

    No further details were available.
