A Diffierent Theft.......

(From the files of the Rancho Santa Fe Patrol, Thursday, July 21, 2011...)

Over the past week we have taken reports for the theft of Back Flow Preventer Manifolds.  What the heck is a Back flow Preventer Manifold?   Well, its the "U" shaped pipe object you see coming out of the ground- usually near a water meter.  Its made to prevent water back flowing through the pipes into your plumbing.  The pipes are being stolen for the brass or copper value of the metal.  But, not all back flow preventers are brass....

The stolen valves are taken to a metal recyclers and the crooks try to get cash for them.  Changes in the laws prevent an immediate handout of cash- the recyler has to take the persons name and information and contact the authorities before handing over the cash.

Both cases we investigated occurred late at night.  If you happen to see a car or truck stopped on the side of the road looking suspicious, please give us a call.

We Have Moved

We have moved our office to 16936 El Fuego.  This is on the south side of the Fire Station in the village.  Our mailing address and phone numbers do not change.  To reach us- 858-756-4372 or 858-756-9966.   There may be a delay in answering emails for a day or so.

Mountain Lion Seen

On July 5, 2011 at about 2:00pm, a resident in the area of  16100 blk of Via Del Alba,  saw what he described as a Mountain Lion cross his driveway.  The animal was walking.  It was not aggressive.  The sighting was reported to Fish and Game.  If you see a Mountain Lion you should not approach the animal.   If you should see a mountain lion, you are encouraged to call Fish and Game at 858-467-4257.  If the animal is a threat, call 911.

Although historically sightings are rare, there are several types of wild animals that live here in Rancho Santa Fe.  Mountain Lions main food source is deer and coyotes.  Eliminating plant species that attract deer help discourage mountain lions from coming into the area.

Please take precautions – mountain lions are most active at night as well as dusk and dawn.  Do not leave children outside unattended; don’t leave pet food or food that may attract animals outside.  Do not leave animals outside unattended.  Horses should be kept in stalls in the barn.  Be careful when walking/ jogging at dusk and dawn time periods.   If you see a mountain lion- make noise-lots of it.  Yell, scream, and bang on something.  For example, pocket sized air horns are a good way to do that.

If you have any questions please call the Dept of Fish and Game at 858-467-4201  or the RSF Patrol 858-756-4372.

Scenes from a San Diego County Wildland Training Exercise at Lake Hodges, Calif. DAY 2..

A little rain didn't dampen the spirits of hundreds of firefighters from 28 San Diego County fire agencies on Tuesday, May 17, 2011 as they concluded annual wildland training at Lake Hodges, Calif.

And for some bonus coverage...

...Dial it up. Fire training exercise over, the lake re-opens to fishing on Wednesday.

By dweisman

PLUS BONUS COVERAGE OF 'THE ACCIDENT' AT THE LAKE...Featuring the Del Dios Bicycle Players.

As fortune - bad - would have it, a bicyclist suffered a fall at the right place with hundreds of EMTs around.

So, as an added busines we bring your photos from 'The Accident' as well.

Last but least, the lake as it stands Monday, May 16, 2011

Enjoy?

MORE WILDLAND TRAINING FROM LAKE HODGES, DEL DIOS, CALIF...

Like I was saying, its the annual Wildland Training Day at Lake Hodges and about 100 engine companies along with numerous batallion chiefs and firefighting apparatus, and about a half-dozen fire suppression non-stealth helicopters trained all day Monday at the lake.

They came from every firefighting agency in San Diego County for the hootenanny at the lake.

It was a fun day for all what with seminars, hands-on training and well, sitting around in fire engines all day.

By dweisman

Warning: Arsonists Beware, Stay Away from Lake Hodges Monday for the Lake is Fire-Training or Something...

All of San Diego County's fire agencies turned out in force on Monday for the annual meeting of the clans. Well, the annual wildfire exercise. And what place more appropriate than at the Del Dios Fire Station and Lake Hodges where the 2007 Witch Creek Fire was brought to its knees and vanquished.

Agencies, along with all available firefighting helcopters, spent the day doing stuff around the lake. This included wildfire training seminars at the station as well as hands-on fire suppression and safety drills at the lake. Anyone who was stranded around Lake Hodges due to, I dunno, having a crappy Toyota RAV 4 transmission, were just plain out of luck, but we digress...

....Enjoy!

FREE MONEY AT MISSION FEDERAL CREDIT UNION SOLANA BEACH, CALIF.? NOPE but thief got away with $3K...

A man wearing a black bandanna over his face robbed a Mission Federal Credit Union branch around 11 a.m. today, Wednesday in the 900 block of Loma Santa Fe at Solana Beach.

The suspect was described as a black man in his mid-30s who was wearing a black baseball cap, a black leather jacket, and a black bandana over his face, San Diego County Sheriff's Lt. Jim Walker said.

The man had his hand in his pocket as if he had a gun, but no weapon was seen, Walker said.

No vehicle was seen as the man fled on foot with an estimated $3,000. He was last seen on foot, heading toward the Vons market in the Lomas Santa Fe Plaza shopping center, Walker said.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Sheriff's Department's at 858-565-5200.

Moose No Longer Loose So Get Off Our Cloud and Return Those Damn Bronze and Iron Sculptures...OH THE HUMANITY STOP THESE HORRIBLE THEFT AND RETURN INCIDENTS!!!

(Photo: This moose is no longer loose after being returned "mysteriously" to its Ramona owner last weekend. In related stolen large outdoor sculpture matters, San Diego Sherriffs deputies said they were in hot pursuit of a Rancho Santa Fe bronze sculpture and Solana Beach iron-cast sculpture, and its absconders, also missing in action.)

Anybody around Rancho Santa Fe missing a giant outdoor bronze horse statue estinated to be worth $4,000? How about somebody at Solana Beach missing a cast-iron statue of undescribed nature estimated at $6,250?

You're not exactly in luck, but have no fear, sort of, the San Diego Sheriffs Department is on the case. Those tributes to the bronze and iron ages are being sought as a result of the mother lode of the entire set, a 600-pound bronze moose, suddenly showing up back at its pre-stolen home on the southwestern outskirts of Ramona.

A woman who had read a newspaper article about the statue's theft was visiting a popular equestrian area at Dye Road and Southern Oak Road in Ramona lnear sunset ast week and spotted the at-large moose, said Sgt. Christina Bavencoff of the San Diego County Sheriff's Department.

The woman said she left the area for abut two hours. when she returned, lo-and-behold a 600-pound bronze moose at the same spot staring at her in a vacant field, according to Bavencoff.

"Sometime between 7 and 9 at night, a truck or a van or something probably pulled in to dump it off there," Bavencoff said. "Everybody's pretty much just baffled."

The moose vanished from a Ramona home in late February, and more than 17 other statues also had been stolen in recent months across the North County region. Among those were a cast-iron statue worth $6,250 stolen from its Solana Beach owner and a bronze horse statue worth $4,000 stolen from someone in Rancho Santa Fe.

Most of the thefts occurred within the last six months, she said.

Bavencoff said she had no idea whether the statues were being sold or scrapped or smuggled across the Mexican border.

However, she urged residents to be careful; while many of the statues were stolen from front yards, some were taken from backyards. Such an invasion could lead to violent confrontations between the thieves and surprised residents, she said.

Anyone with any information about how the moose traveled to the vacant field ---- or tips about any other statue theft ---- is asked to call the San Diego County Sheriff's Department at 858-565-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.

OH THE HUMANITY!!! Dump truck Ditches Del Dios Highway, Calif. Morning Rush Hour Traffic...

Just before 8 a.m. Wednesday, March 31, and just in time for morning rush hour, a dump truck overturned on Del Dios Highway near Lake Hodges Dam, Ranch Santa Fe firefighters said.

Maybe, the dump truck driver was watching the waterfalls continuing at the dam. Maybe, those stinking dump trucks shouldn't be allowed on narrow, two-lane Del Dios Highway where they spew pollution, clog up traffic and, yes, even overturn and truly turn the highway into a nightmare, especially at rush hour.

But we digress.

Del Dios Highway was CLOSED, closed we tell ya, from 8 to 9 a.m. so a lot of people didn't get to -- Maynard G. Krebs voice, please --  "work". But gee whiz, no injuries, so that's, er, nice, we guess.

The dastardly dump truck -- its ownership not revealed -- had been towing a small flatbed trailer with a tractor. That's just the worst kind of traffic possible on the misnamed highway because these stinking trucks and trailer go like 30 miles per hour under the speed limit. They also don't turn off when a long line of vehicles is behind them and technically, the law says it's illegal to drive with five vehicles, or more, in the rear.

ANYWAY, Firefighters found the truck and erstwhile trailer lying on its side on the guard rail along the lane headed from Rancho Santa Fe to Del Dios.

Taxpayer dollars came to work then.

Aside from the Rancho Santa Fe Fire engine company and San Diego Medical Services ambulance and crew, San Diego County Department of Public Works employees cleaned up the road while California Highway Patrol officers told people they couldn't drive anywhere.

The accident remains under investigation with no charges filed as yet, said Julie Taber, Rancho Santa Fe Fire spokesperson.

Oh, the humanity!

(By the way, photo below, the waterfall event is coming to a close at Lake Hodges Dam where the one month-long attraction was enjoyed by one and all.)

Bird Gave the Word, Died a Hero En Fuego in Rancho Bernardo Apartment Fire on Tuesday...

A Rancho Bernardo family's goffin cockatoo died Tuesday after his squawking alerted them to a fire from which they were able to escape.

About 30 firefighters responded, including units from Rancho Santa Fe, San Diego, Escondido, and Poway. Firefights took about an hour to put out the fire, which had spread to the attic of the two-story condo, authorities said.

The cockatoo, alas, apparently died a hero. It was last seen en fuego in the laundry room of the family's condominium at 17487 Bernardo Center Dr., said San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman Maurice Luque.

The bird would have turned 2 years old on Wednesday, Luque said.

"He's the only reason we got out," said the owner, who didn't want to be identified, in tears as a friend comforted her.

The call came in just before 10 a.m. of a fire at the four-unit complex near the library. The woman was at home with her infant when she heard her cockatoo squawking in an unusual manner, Luque said. When the woman went into the laundry room, where the bird usually stayed in its cage, she noticed the bird was on fire and tried to put it out with an extinguisher but was unable to, Luque said.

The woman, whose husband was out jogging, then fled the home with the baby and firefighters arrived to put out the blaze. The fire spread up a chase outside the unit and into a neighboring condominium. The neighbor was not home at the time, Luque said.

Three, or four, people were evacuated from the building and no one was injured. Officials estimated the apartment complex damage at  $750,000. An investigator said the fire may have started when the furnace ignited combustibles, but the cause tentativey was listed as accidental.

Breaking news 4 p.m. -- It's Friday, why is stuff always happening to make traffic worse?

Just some kind of bad moon rising, or doublemoon or whatever you calls it. A vehicle fire just past Via de la Valle at Interstate 5 around 3:30 p.m. reduced already slowing Friday p.m. drive-times to a robust 15 to 20 miles per hour from Del Mar Heights Road north to Santa Fe Drive, Encinitas. Don't expect to hit 60 mph until just before Carlsbad where it then slows down again before the Highway 78 interchange.

Other worries earlier this afternoon included a hit-and-run accident at Carmel Valley Road by the freeway exchanges. For CHP details on each hassle, see below:

Rancho Santa Fe Patrol warns of magazine sales scam going around town - Better Business Bureau offers more information and tips...

This just in from the Rancho Santa Fe Patrol:

"Over the years we have encountered young adults going door to door selling magazine subscriptions.

One of the ruses is to tell you that they represent a local sports team- like soccer or baseball.

Or, they may say that the neighbor  "the Smith's" down the street just gave me some money......  (that's because they just read their name sign out front......)  They are very slick in their approach.

Well a new batch of solicitors are going door to to door in neighboring areas- here is some info from the Sheriff's Dept. :

"Magazine sales scam in San Diego County are being reported to law enforcement. Several students from Cal State San Marcos have been victimized, one for over $500.00 cash in Vista. There were a call from Escondido as well. The Reporting Parties are reporting that part of the ruse is that they are part of project/class with Cal State San Marcos and/or San Diego State. Report any suspicious activity to the Sheriff's Department @ 858-565-5200.

Door to door vendors have to have permits issued by the Sheriff.  They have to be visible and backed up by another legitimate form of ID.  Church groups are exempt.  Our suggestion is not to give anything to door to door vendors.  If you want to donate money, ask them to send you something in the mail.  That way you will have time to look it over and decide if it is legitimate.  They should have a Federal Tax ID number.

Sometimes these solicitors are crooks looking for a way into your house or "casing the  place".

The Better Business Bureau (BBB) warns that deceptive door-to-door magazine sales crews are hitting the pavement and looking to earn a quick buck.

Many magazine publishing companies employ crews of high school and college-age people who are trying to earn money over the summer. These crews are sent to communities to knock on doors and sell magazine subscriptions. While there are many legitimate door-to-door magazine sellers and companies, it is important to be aware that there are also scammers on the prowl.

Door-to-door magazine crews often claim in their sales pitch that they live in or near your neighbourhood and that by purchasing a magazine subscription through them, you will a) help them to get their lives back on track, b) raise money on behalf of a charity, c) raise money to pay for school or d) fund a school trip.

In many instances, these claims are true, but in the case where a scammer is at work, the sales representative may be working to dupe you out of hundreds of dollars in fake magazine subscriptions, usually paid for via a personal cheque written directly to the sales rep.

In reports recently received by the BBB, customers allege that door-to-door magazine sales reps took their cheque for an annual subscription, but that their magazines never arrived. Other victims allege that the sales rep used high pressure or misrepresentative sales tactics and that “students” lied about living in the neighbourhood or attending the nearby school.
Customers aren’t the only victims of this scam. Unscrupulous employers have been known to dupe young salespeople into fraudulently misrepresenting themselves and the subscription sales package. In some cases, young sales crews have been forced to work long hours, endure substandard living conditions and had their wages withheld.

BBB offers the following tips to avoid being scammed by a door-to-door magazine sales rep:

* If someone arrives at your door offering you a magazine subscription ask him or her questions like: Where are you from? Who do you work for? How are you paid? How did you get involved with the magazine company? Use common sense and listen to your gut instinct.

* Don’t fall victim to high-pressure sales tactics. If you are interested in a subscription, but need some time to decide, ask the sales representative to return later. Do some comparison-shopping and research first to see if the subscription offer is legitimate and of any real value.

* Always research the magazine publishing company with your Better Business Bureau (vi.bbb.org) before filling out a cheque for a magazine subscription.

* Never write a cheque directly to a sales rep.

* Get a copy of the subscription order and a receipt. Make sure there is contact information for the company included.

* Know your cancellation rights. In direct (door-to-door) sales over $50, you have a 10-day right to cancel. If you decide to cancel, mail a notice of cancellation to the supplier within 10 days by registered mail. This 10-day “cooling off period” does not apply to purchases or service contracts concluded at a place of business.

Victims of fraudulent magazine sales can file a complaint with their Better Business Bureau.
