RANCHO ENCINITAS ACADEMY NURTURES STUDENTS UNDER THE SHADE OF ONE OF THE CITY’S OLDEST LIVING TREES

Students at Rancho Encinitas Academy Unknowingly Experience a Piece of History Every Time They Step onto their Playground

Situated on the former site of Stallings Ranch Nursery, the Rancho Encinitas Academy Campus holds much more history than just the text books in its library. A majestic oak stands over 40 feet high on the park-like campus and is thought to be one of the city’s oldest living oak trees. The namesake of the city – Encinitas is Spanish for “little oak” – the oak is presumed to be among the original little oak trees on the Rancho Las Encinitas, owned by Don Andres Ybarra in 1842.

The magnificent tree is thought to be more than 275 years old, and is the perfect centerpiece to the school’s sprawling green campus; which covers two acres of landscaped grounds with its sister school, Edison Academy. There are 7 separate buildings custom designed and constructed especially for the school. The campus, with its architecture, landscaping, and proximity to the ocean is conducive to a safe, relaxing and tranquil learning experience.

“Our goal is to nurture a student’s natural wonder and joy of learning, facilitated by a positive and relaxed atmosphere,” said Paul Wulle, Director of Rancho Encinitas Academy. “With it’s rich history and lush grounds, we were able to design a campus that reduces stress and anxiety so that a child’s focus may be on learning.”

Rancho Encinitas Acadmy’s unique learning environment is enhanced by bird aviaries and bunny hutches, and three outdoor playground areas. “Jobs time,”a learn-by-doing activity at Rancho Encinitas Academy, includes recycling, grounds keeping and feeding the animals, activities which promote responsibility and personal development.

Del Mar racing briefs for opening week: Owners given lounge by one Del Mar trainer, TVG, Jim Cassidy...

The largest crowd in Del Mar history of 46,588 turned out Wednesday, July 20, for the opening day card at the seaside oval in Southern California. Attendance exceeded the record set a year ago on opening day when 45,309 were on hand. Total pari-mutuel handle for the opener this year was $13,234,590 compared to the $12,461,600 wagered last year, for an increase of 6.2%. In the day’s feature race, even-money favorite Mr. Commons and jockey Mike Smith rolled to victory in the $112,100 Oceanside Stakes. Outrun in the early stages of the race for 3-year-olds, Mr. Commons, a son of Artie Schiller, circled his rivals on the stretch turn and wasn’t pressured in the final sixteenth as he won by 1 1/2  lengths. Final time for a mile on grass was 1:34.96 (VIDEO). Smith was later arrested on suspicion of DUI during a massive drunk driving "multi-agency" task force traffic net rung around the track during the day resulting in 15 DUI arrests.

OWNERS GIVEN LOUNGE BY ONE DEL MAR TRAINER

The backside area of most racetracks is not normally the most luxurious part of the facility. Barns are primarily utilitarian, the comfort of the horses and not much else involved.

This summer at Del Mar trainer Doug O'Neill is providing a little bit of luxury for the owners of his horses. An 'Owners Lounge' is now available next to O'Neill's office at the track.

"It can get too tight in here," O'Neill assistant Leandro Mora said recently. "Lots of times we have 10 or 15 owners and their kids and families and we built this thing to keep everybody happy."

O'Neill, the defending training champion, converted one stall next to his office for an 'Owners Lounge' with seating and refreshments. Precautions have also been provided for the visitors from the thoroughbred traffic that goes on.

"Especially at Del Mar, we have owners who want to come around the barn," Mora said. "We have plenty of visitors at Santa Anita and Hollywood Park, but we're used to it and we know what to do there. And we get more here than we do anywhere else."

A large painting of Lava Man decorates the converted stall, though not the one that the millionaire gelding used. The picture depicts Lava Man, 2006 Pacific Classic winner, in the company of ONeill's father and the fathers of the three ownership connections of the champion runner.

TRAINER JIM CASSIDY READY TO RUMBLE AT DEL MAR OPENING WEEK STAKES RACES

Trainer Jim Cassidy plans to start Oceanside nominee Robbie’s War in an allowance race on turf and Kid Edward in Saturday’s $300,000 Eddie Read Stakes, a Grade 1 over 1 1/8 miles on turf.

The Cassidy team for Del Mar will not feature the multiple Grade  1 winner The Usual Q.T., who is currently turned out, the trainer said. The Usual Q.T. has not started since finishing third in the Grade  2 American Handicap on May 20. “He’s getting 90 days and he’s already gotten 30 days,” Cassidy said.

Kid Edward will be tested in the Eddie Read, which is expected to draw Aggie Engineer, Buenos Dias, Caracortado, Celtic Princess, Jeranimo, Smart Bid, and Victor’s Cry.

Second in the Grade 2 La Jolla Handicap at Del Mar, Kid Edward was second in an optional claimer at Hollywood Park on July 2, his first start since a third in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Derby last October.

Jeranimo has not started since a fourth as the 7-5 favorite in the Grade  2 American Handicap at Hollywood Park in April. Owner B.J. Wright and trainer Mike Pender considered the Hollywood Gold Cup on the synthetic main track on July  9, but opted to wait for the Eddie Read.

“There was no reason to take his favorite surface away from him,” Pender said. “All systems are go.”

Jeranimo won the Grade 2 San Gabriel Handicap over 1 1/8 miles on turf at Santa Anita last December, but is winless in three starts this year. He was third in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile at Santa Anita in March.

Appearance fees ain't just for celebrities -- Del Mar track giving $1,000 a horse to race during July 20 to Sept. 7 summer meet...

Tony Romo wins Drew Brees Cox Celebrity Championship at Morgan Run Club & Resort, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif...

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo never had played the golf course at Morgan Run Club & Resort in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., before this weekend. But that didn't seem to have a negative effect on his performance.

Romo shot a 1-under 70 on Saturday and then a 4-under 67 on Sunday to finish two strokes ahead of former NHL player Dan Quinn to win the Cox Celebrity Championship, which was hosted by Saints quarterback Drew Brees.

"The number of fans and the amount of support for this tournament are each a testament to Drew Brees," Romo told SanDiego.com after accepting the winner's trophy. "It's a great tournament, and I feel lucky to be a part of it."

The tournament occurred the weekend before Romo is scheduled to get married. Romo and fiancée Candice Crawford are to wed May 28 at Arlington Hall in Lee Park.

According to SanDiego.com, Romo donated the $25,000 purse to The Brees Dream Foundation, which was founded in 2003 by Brees and his wife and is dedicated to advancing research in the fight against cancer and providing care, education and opportunities for children in need.

Former Texas cornerback Quentin Jammer, who now plays for the San Diego Chargers, finished the tournament in last place, shooting 57 over.

Romo attempted to qualify for the U.S. Open golf tournament earlier in the month, but he failed to do so after shooting a 9-over 81 in a local qualifier at Stonebridge Ranch Country Club in McKinney, Texas.

Another weekend, another victory on the links for Cowboys’ quarterback Tony Romo.

Romo won the Cox Celebrity Championship golf tournament this weekend, an event hosted by Romo’s New Orleans counterpart and native Texan, Drew Brees, in San Diego, California.

Romo shot a one-under 70 on Saturday and a four-under 67 on Sunday to finish two strokes ahead of former NHL player Dan Quinn for the victory. According to SanDiego.com, Romo donated his $25,000 purse to the Brees Dream Foundation.

Afterward, he was full of praise for Brees’ involvement in the event.

"The number of fans and the amount of support for this tournament are each a testament to Drew Brees," said Romo, per the Dallas Morning News. "It's a great tournament and I feel lucky to be a part of it."

Del Mar Thoroughbred Club looking at five racing days a week starting July 2...

The vice president/racing for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club is looking for more than a few good horses for this summer's annual race meet. His job: Fill seven, five-day race weeks beginning July 20.

It might not sound like a big deal, but considering the Southern California racing circuit has raced five days in a week only four times in the first five months of 2011, it becomes a very tall order.

"We're working hard at recruiting horses," track president Craig Fravel said Friday. "We're going to give it our best effort.

"There always has been a surge in the (horse) inventory in the summer months. We do have some stables that ship in here that don't stay all year round. We hope those kinds of trends continue."

Robbins spent part of last week in Northern California trying to convince trainers and owners to come to Del Mar.

"We hope to match last year in the number of races," Robbins said

Fravel said Del Mar projects its overnight purse... (more)

San Diego Sockers Defeats Guadalajara La Raza to Capture 2011 North American Championship at Del Mar Arena...

Sockers Win Professional Arena Soccer League North American Championship

The game was a rematch of last year's championship, which the Sockers took 9-8 at Del Mar Arena. In some ways the game was a reverse of last year's game in which La Raza lost their composure and found themselves trailing 6-1 before rallying.

Tonight, the game was close at the half with the Sockers leading just 5-4. The second half is where Guadalajara came unglued and San Diego ran away with the game.

At one point Fernando Camarena pushed Anthony Medina after goalkeeper Eduardo Arevalo fell on a loose ball. Camarena wasn't done, shoving the assistant referee earning himself a red card.

When all was said and done Kraig Chiles put the ball in the net four times and had five goals for the tournament earning the Playoff MVP award, the first time the award did not go to a goalkeeper. Not that Chris Toth, who started yesterday and today's starter Riley Swift weren't deserving.

John Krause had two goals yesterday and used his big body to overpower La Raza with several key blocks and steals. Another standout was Eric Wunderle, who scored maybe the biggest goal in tonight's game. As the ball rolled slowly back to goalkeeper Jesus Flores Wunderle streaked down the side and just kept coming and coming, blocked Flores' clear and beat him in a race back to the goal to knock the ball in on the goal line.

Miguel Vaca was the highest scorer in the tournament with six goals and three assists for nine points.

San Diego, winners of 12 indoor championships, will look to keep the titles flowing on March 19 when they host the Cincinnati Kings in the US Open Final at Del Mar Arena.

SCHEDULE:

March 12, 2011- Individual Championship Test

March 13, 2011 - Freestyle Test

Under the beautiful Southern California sun Para-Equestrian Dressage athletes from all over the world presented their mounts at the jog of the 2011 Dressage Affaire.  Horses were examined and evaluated in front of FEI judges, stewards, and veterinarians while spectators observed.  This weekend's competition is a Para-Equestrian Dressage CPEDI3* horse show recognized by FEI, USEF, USDF, CDS, and DASC.  This event gives para-equestrians the opportunity to qualify for the 2012 Paralympics in London. Friday begins the Team Test, followed by Saturday's Individual Championship, and finally the Freestyle competition on Sunday.  International competitors from all five Para-Equestrian Dressage grades (1a, 1b, II, III, and IV) will be in attendance.

The scores from the Team Test will be combined with the scores from the Individual Championship Test to determine each country's overall team placing.

Four riders are rom the United States: Dena Pate aboard Imagine That (Grade IV); Eleanor Brimmer with her horse Vadico Interagro (Grade III); Laurietta Oakleaf and the Stallion VPRH Pegasus vom Nieh (Grade Ib); and Jonathan Wentz aboard a new mount named NTEC Daytona Beach and Wentz's trusty team mate NTEC Ritcher Scale (Grade Ib).

Competing at a CPEDI3* gives each of these riders a chance to ride under the same parameters as what will be expected of them at the Paralympics.  However, each of these riders are all looking at this show as an opportunity.  Eleanor Brimmer noted, "I would like to have a good time this weekend and hopefully earn my qualifying scores for the 2012 Paralympics."  Jonathan Wentz commented, "I hope to really build with my horse Daytona.  We have a year and a half until the Paralympics and it would be wonderful to take her.  She has all of the potential in the world to compete at that level."

2011 Volcom VQS Blowfish Surf Series Cardiff, Calif. Seaside Reef draws 200 competitors

(For much more in photos, coverage, visit the Big Kahunas just over the rainbow...)

The Blowfish Surf Series has always had a huge crowd of competitors and with this being the last event of the season nothing could prepare us for the tornado that was coming. After cancelling the contest on Saturday due to crazy weather and flat surf we showed up bright and early Sunday to waves being a playful 3-4 feet and ready to get this party started.

As sign-ups rolled along, we realized we were close to 200 competitors and we still haven’t signed up everyone. After some more educated planning and shuffling, we were under way with over 240 competitors. The day rolled along and before we new it was time to dive in to the finals.

Here are some recaps from the finals. The girls had their hands full with some of the best talent from all over the state. When the dust settled it was Kulia Doherty winning in dominating fashion. The Squids had a great turn out and are more concerned with covering each other in flour then getting their price bags. Dagen Stagg finally took his first win of the year and a heap of prizes from Volcom, Electric, Globe, and much more.

The Grom dudes had there work cut out for them and with Taylor Clark in the mix you better bring you’re A game. Taylor found a way to hold everyone off again and racked up his third win of the season! The Junior’s had 8 first round heats and were as pumped as the Squids all day. In the end, Ian Craine beat out the other 47 entrants and grabbed the $250.00 from Muscle Milk .

Jenny Craig operation, Rancho Paseana, Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.  remains on the go in top thoroughbred racing...

They seem to arrive annually, these equine treats from Jenny Craig.

The lady whose name is synonymous with a chain of weight loss centers she founded in the 1980s with her late husband is today an active grandmother living near Del Mar with a small stable of top-class Thoroughbreds.

In recent years, the Craig breeding operation has been good enough to send horses to the Kentucky Derby, although Chocolate Candy finished fifth behind Mine that Bird in 2009 and Sidney’s Candy was 17th behind Super Saver last year.

There are no 3-year-olds in the stable mentioned as Kentucky Derby candidates this year. There are enough older horses on the team, though, to take on the world.

Saturday at Santa Anita, JennyCraig’s Twirling Candy will be an odds-on favorite to win the $750,000 Santa Anita Handicap, the biggest race for older horses in the first half of the year in California. For Craig, who has continued her involvement in racing following the death of her husband, Sidney, in 2008, the Big Cap is one major trophy she has not claimed.

With Sid, as he was known to his friends, Jenny Craig won such races as the 1992 English Derby with Dr. Devious, the Breeders’ Cup Distaff the same year with Paseana, and the 2003 Pacific Classic with Candy Ride. Sidney’s Candy won the 2010 Santa Anita Derby for Jenny Craig, and she wants a Big Cap win this weekend, if for no other reason than to prove how good Twirling Candy is.

“It would be tremendous,” she said of the Big Cap. “It would mean a lot to me.”

Since Sid’s death, Jenny Craig’s involvement in racing has shifted. The size of the stable – racehorses and breeding stock − is down through a reduction at sales in recent years. This year, there will be 12 2-year-olds, and they must be brilliant to keep up with their 4-year-old stablemates.

Sidney’s Candy has won 6 of 11 starts and $893,560, most recently the Grade 3 Sir Beaufort at Santa Anita on Dec. 26. Minor injuries have kept him sidelined since, but there have been conversations of sending him to England for the Royal Ascot meeting in June.

Twirling Candy won his first Grade 1 in the Malibu Stakes on Dec. 26, running seven furlongs in 1:19.70 to break Spectacular Bid’s 1980 track record. On Feb. 5, Twirling Candy won the Grade 2 Strub Stakes by 4 1/4 lengths, confirming his status as the top horse in California, and perhaps the nation. He has won 6 of 7 starts and $579,900.

The success of Twirling Candy is not a complete surprise. In the fall of 2009, before his debut, Twirling Candy was the talk of the barns at Rancho Paseana, near Del Mar, the training center where Craig keeps her young horses.

“The guys at the farm said, ‘Wait until you see Twirling Candy if you think Sidney’s Candy is good,’ ” she said. “I couldn’t wait for him to start running. He really is exceptional.”

Sid Craig was often at the fore when the couple was at the races. Jenny Craig recalled he was proudest when Candy Ride, purchased in early 2003 after two Group 1 wins in Argentina, scored a comfortable win in that year’s Pacific Classic, not far from the Craigs’ home in Rancho Santa Fe.

“To him, it was one of the highlights of his racing career,” she said. “The whole family was there. Even though we’d won the Epsom Derby with Dr Devious, it wasn’t the same as winning in the back yard with a horse that would go on to become a super stud.”

Candy Ride is the sire of Sidney’s Candy, Twirling Candy, and Chocolate Candy, a 5-year-old who has won three stakes and is nearing a comeback after nine months on the sidelines. John Sadler trains Sidney’s Candy and Twirling Candy, and Jerry Hollendorfer trains Chocolate Candy.

“I am so excited about Chocolate Candy,” Craig said. “People have kind of forgotten about him. He was out for a while with a problem with his hoof. I think he’s going to turn out to be a good racehorse. I’m excited. I give Jerry Hollendorfer all the credit with that.”

All three were bred by the Craigs before Sid died of cancer in July 2008. Her thoughts on racing often include his memory.

“I guarantee he’s looking down, saying, ‘Where were these horses when I was there?’ ” Craig said. “He lived for that. He loved it so much.”

Since his death, Jenny Craig has visited three continents, kept up with her grandchildren, and spent countless hours on the golf course.

“For the last couple of years, I’ve been traveling a lot − Africa, Australia, the Caribbean − and I did it intentionally to help change my routine,” she said. “When you lose your partner in business, and a husband and you’re best friend, if you stay in the same routine void becomes so omnipresent. I felt I had to do other things. I’m done traveling now. I want to enjoy playing golf, watching the horses run, and spending time with my friends.”

Of course, her children and grandchildren root for grandma’s horses, but the link to the sport is not strong through the family, she said.

“Since Sid died, our children are not that excited about horse racing,” she said. “They’re raising small children and going to sports with the kids. They’re not anxious to travel up to LA.”

That was one of the reasons she sold shares of Twirling Candy to Marty Wygod and Lane’s End Farm last month.

“It’s good to have partners that really enjoy the show and appreciate a real talent,” she said. “It’s fun having people with you to share in the excitement.”

It’s already been an exciting winter for Jenny Craig. Twirling Candy and the other runners may keep it like that through all of 2011.

San Diego Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy's International 2011 "Rising Stars Cup" has come to an end in Carmel Valley's Ocean Air Recreational Center. Out of 170 participants - rhythmic gymnasts from US took home 5 Cups, Russians took 2 and Philippine gymnast took home 1 "Rising Stars Cup".

This is not only the most beautiful Olympic sport; this is also a great human story of Rhythmic Gymnastics Dynasty. Rhythmic Gymnastics is one of the very few bright spots in the history of Soviet Union. One of the founders of San Diego Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy, the host and organizer of 2011 "Rising Stars Cup" competition event, was involved in the creation and development of Rhythmic Gymnastics sports in former Soviet Union and Novosibirsk.

Alla continued "We would like to see more interest in this beautiful sport from parents and girls ages from 4 to 15. Rhythmic Gymnastics is a wonderful and graceful Olympic Sports, combining ballet and creative movements to music. Unlike other sports participated by girls in US, like soccer, basketball and e.t.c. - Rhythmic Gymnastics is completely trauma free sports.

Galina Aksutchits one of the founders of San Diego Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy during 2011 "Rising Stars Cup" competition event said a few words... and here we have a full transcript of her speech. "Dear Friends, Colleges and Athletes from United States and Russia...

I was honored to be involved in the creation and development of Rhythmic Gymnastics sports in former Soviet Union and Siberia. In the 1940's of the last century I was sent to Novosibirsk after graduating Moscow Government University of Physical Culture. During those years Soviet Government started very actively to promote this gorgeous sport in USSR. Novosibirsk was one of the leading cities involved in this sports creation. Rhythmic Gymnastics teams from Novosibirsk always took gold, silver or bronze medals in the most prestigious championships of USSR.

Later my sister Valentina Baigoulova took over, where I left off. Her accomplishments were much more substantial... she coached and raised almost 100 Masters of Sports in Rhythmic Gymnastics. Many of her students were part of main Soviet Rhythmic Gymnastics Team. Unfortunately a serious illness and then death stopped her important work. Every year in her home town of Novosibirsk and sometimes in other cities in Russia, there is a Rhythmic Gymnastics competition to honor the memory of the great couch and great person Valentina Baigoulova, my little sister.

Galina Aksutchits continued "At this 2011 International "Rising Stars Cup" we see a new generation of athletes and coaches. The head couch and a partner of San Diego Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy Alla Zubkis taking over where her mother Valentina Baigoulova left off. Elena Silaeva is the other head couch and a partner in San Diego Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy is also a student of my sister."

And, of course, we have our youngest generation here. Two of the 170  participants are granddaughters of Valentina Baigoulova; Victoria Zubkis and Maxim Zubkis, they are also competing here in 2011 "Raising Stars Cup". Therefore, life goes on.

The thing that I started more than 65 years ago at the time when I was one of the first Rhythmic Gymnasts and then coaches in Soviet Union and my sister Valentina continued and put all of heart and soul into lives and shines here today during this "Rising Stars Cup" event hosted and organized by San Diego Rhythmic Gymnastics Academy and Ocean Air Recreational Center...

This event means so much to me. I want to thank all of you my col-legs and participants, who made this event possible. Also as a representative of older generation I want to congratulate all of the participants in this competition. I am really happy to see such a young and beautiful athletes here.

Good luck in this, and in all of your future competitions.

 About Rhythmic Gymnastics sports:

Modern rhythmic gymnastics originated as a sport in the USSR during the 1940’s. The All-Union Section of Modern Rhythmic Gymnastics was created in 1945, and in 1963 it was transformed into a federation of the USSR. In the late 1940’s a classification program and rules of competition were developed. Annual championships have been held in the USSR since 1949; competitions for the All-Union Cup in Modern Rhythmic Gymnastics have been held since 1965. All-Union junior championships have been held since 1966.

After exhibition performances by Soviet gymnasts in the late 1950’s and early 1960’s in a number of countries, modern rhythmic gymnastics was accepted as a sport by the International Gymnastic Federation. World championships have been held in odd numbered years by the International Gymnastic Federation since 1963.

Several important international competitions have been held since the early 1970’s―for the Intervision Cup, the prize of the newspaper Student Tribune (People’s Republic of Bulgaria), and the Eighth of March (Czechoslovak Socialist Republic) and Golden Hoop (USSR) prizes. Modern rhythmic gymnastics has developed in most socialist countries, as well as in France, the Federal Republic of Germany, Italy, and the USA.
