A new comedy special, " Norm MacDonald: Me Doing Stand-Up" (Comedy
Dwight Thurston, host of WWUH's eclectic "In the Weeds" program at WWUH 91.3 FM, played his last show Friday afternoon, closing with Leonard Cohen's "Closing Time."
The man who brought us "The Civil War" and "The War" now wants to see if we can just all get along. Ken Burns announced an initiative Friday in Philadelphia to foster a national conversation about "Civility and Democracy." The announcement came the day before a conference at the National Constitution Center this weekend, "Can We Talk? A Conversation about Civility and Democracy in America." As part of the project, Burns and fellow filmmaker Lynn Novick will join the National Constitution Center and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting to develop educational materials for a converstion on civility that will be conducted in a multi-city tour this year. It will also have something to do with the premiere of the latest historical documentary from Burns and Novick, "Prohibition," scheduled to air this fall on PBS. Although the battle over the 18th Amendment doesn't immediately bring to mind the notion of civility. But as Novick said in a statement, "In many ways, 'Prohibition' is an example of an era... Yet another singing show that may be more direct in its intent than "American Idol," "America's Karaoke Challenge" was announced Friday as part of the ABC summer schedule. A look at the Karaoke World Championship s USA, it premieres Aug. 8 alongside a second season of "Bachelor Pad," a "Bachelor" spinoff so confusing, I could never get the hang of it.

Roger Catlin | TV Eye: Roger Catlin | TV Eye: TCM Elizabeth Taylor Salute is April 10
Turner Classic Movies was quick to schedule a 24-hour salute to Elizabeth Taylor, who died this morning in Los Angeles. The salute on Sunday, April 10 will feature 11 of her classic movies, with her two Oscar-winning performances, in primetime -- "Butterfield 8" at 8 p.m. and "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?" at 10 p.m. They might have had room for more, but it includes George Stevens' epic "Giant" at 12:30 a.m., clocking in at 201 minutes. The last time I saw Elizabeth Taylor, it was nine years ago at the Michael Jackson 30th anniversary concerts at Madison Square Garden. It was also the first time I ever saw her in person. A staunch supporter and longtime friend of Jackson, it was she who introduced Michael when he finally hit the stage. Before that, she sat with him, and with Macauley Caukin, in the VIP section of the arena, watching the earlier performances. It was a weird mix of Old Hollywood and current pop stars in the crowd. With Janet Leigh sitting near Jay-Z and Diddy. Marlon Brando was also there, blathering on and on from the stage before impatient fans began to boo.

Ten episodes have been ordered for the first stason, commencing June 24. "Young Broke & Beautiful," which also begins June 24, is a kind of underground travelogue from Stuart Shufferman, better known on the web as Broke-Ass Stuart. "Whisker Wars," from the producer of "Deadliest Catch," follows the world of international competitive facial hair growing. It starts Aug. 5. "Bullet in the Face," starting next year, is a scripted comedy about a criminal turned cop. Gunter Vogler stars in the production from Alan Spencer ("Sledge Hammer!"). The bill, which prohibits local public stations from using federal money to pay for NPR programs, has little chance of support in the Democrat-controlled Senate, however. And the White House has said it "strongly opposed" the bill, saying "undercutting funding for these radio stations, notably ones in rural areas where such outlets are already scarce, would result in communities losing valuable programming, and some stations could be forced to shut down altogether." In the House, Rep. Anthony Weiner, D-N.Y., held a sign that said "Save Click and Clack." Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., brought up the "gotcha" footage of NPR funders last week that led to resignation of two NPR officials. "Why should we allow taxpayers dollars to be used to advocate one ideology?" Mike Fleiss Sucks at Math
Let me ask you a question. If you had a pizza in front of you cut into, say, 12 slices and you ate 11 of those in one sitting, if someone asks you, “Hey, how much of that pizza did you eat?”, what would your answer be? I think most normal people would say, “I pretty much ate the whole thing”, or, “I ate all but one piece”. What if later on you ended up eating that last piece? When talking about that pizza, you’d probably just tell people “I ate the whole thing”. Did it happen at one sitting? No, but eventually you had eaten all of it so that’s all that matters. Well, apparently “Bachelor” creator Mike Fleiss failed basic math in 5th grade as evidenced by an answer he gave to EW.com in an interview that posted last night, in which he addressed me specifically. Here is the question and answer exchange:
