@Bonnie Russell: Dumanis' continued reluctance to prosecute inactive attorney P. Gregory

Bonnie Russell On: Dumanis’ continued reluctance to prosecute inactive attorney P. Gregory...

Bonnie Dumanis’ continued reluctance to prosecute inactive attorney Patricia Gregory remains a mystery to those aware of Dumanis’ preference for being handed evidence by crime victims. This makes Dumanis’ latest refusal to prosecute an open and shut case against an about to be disbarred attorney, more than a little strange.

But first, a brief history on internet crime

A decade ago, then San Francisco columnist Reynolds Holding, wrote The State Bar should Crack Down on California Lawyers” in a column featuring one of California’s worst attorneys, Ron Lais.  The column stated State Bar response to client complaints was sluggish at best, considering the bar had ten years worth of complaints regarding the Ron Lais "performed."  Eventually though, the State Bar forced Lais’ resignation, until he paid his now former clients restitution.

Lais promptly filed bankruptcy, which immediately discharged the State Bar’s restitution order.  Lais then promptly incorporated Child Custody Legal Network and continued offering legal services online as an International Child Custody Consultant, (and sued me four times for warning potential victims not to use him).  The Orange County DA charged Lais with double-digit felony counts regarding the Unauthorized Practice of Law online, and Lais went to prison for a while.  (He's now out and touting himself as an International Law Professor on Twitter.)

But Lais got me thinking as the problem of non-attorneys or former attorneys practicing on-line has increased.  Most recently in San Diego.  But at least there is some good news.

The first being the State Bar is now acting a little quicker, and the second being an easy solution to prevent the public from being duped online by former attorneys with a cash and moral problem.  More on that later, as the original problem remains.

San Diego’s blind eye to unscrupulous, former attorneys

San Diego North County family law attorney Patricia Gregory is now listed on the State Bar site Ordered Inactive – Not Eligible to Practice Law.”

The back story is Gregory had dipped her hands into the trust account of her client, Luwain Ng, to the tune of 80k.  Gregory later admitted the money was gone and made arrangements to repay Ng.

Plans went awry. Nine months later Ng had still not been paid in full. Eventually Ng complains to the State Bar.  This prompts Gregory to fire a snarky email to Ng in which Gregory advises she will discontinue interest payments, before ading as if she was somehow a victim,

“If you wanted to punish me you have succeeded.  I am destroyed.  You have a $20,000.00, a ridiculously low legal bill and my obligation to pay $80,000.00.  I have nothing.  Seems a bit unfair, no?  But you did get your revenge.  Hope it was sweet.”

Gregory’s  website remains active, announcing:  CARLSBAD DIVORCE ATTORNEY representing clients in divorce, custody, support, and domestic violence cases in San Diego County.

The solution to protect the public from those who practice law on-line who shouldn’t, was well received by the State Bar president after it popped into my head last week.  He suggested I mention it to a State Bar prosecutor, who also seemed to like it.  (The prosecutor's email after our conversation indicated he forwarded my suggestion to the intake office.)

As it now stands, since Patricia Gregory refuses to remove her website from the Internet in spite of the State Bar’s repeated requests, Gregory is likely going to face additional charges.

(Interestingly,  Gregory's legal website remains in full working order - including the claim:  “She currently teaches graduate level courses in Business Law and Ethics”).  However, a second problem slipped to the forefront.

The second problem being District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis' tolerance for white-collar crime

In spite of a request from Patricia Gregory’s former client to charge Gregory, District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis refuses to prosecute.  Or say why she won't.  This is puzzling as the case is very straight-forward.  Gregory admitted to her 80k raid on Ng's account; and Ng provided much in the way of proof along with her request DA Dumanis charge her.

Sound of crickets chirping.

Calls to the DAs office remain unreturned.

The silence of San Diego's District Attorney is problematic as Bonnie Dumanis has spent an enormous amount of tax payer dollars in an unsuccessful effort to have her perceived stalker tried and convicted for writing what Dumanis considered a threatening letter.  This would be months after declining to prosecute Diana Gonzalez’ husband, after he kidnapped and raped Gonzalez.  After which Diana was found butchered to death in a college bathroom.  (Diana’s husband promptly disappeared).

Additionally, after Dumanis’ alleged stalker was acquitted in Riverside County, Bonnie Dumanis received 24/7 law enforcement security for herself.  She then spent time and energy maneuvering to have the guy prosecuted in federal court at additional taxpayer expense.

The jury deadlocked.

Unfortunately the public receives no such service from San Diego’s current DA and mayoral candidate for a relatively easy-to-prove, white collar crime.

The solution?

As a preventive measure, until Dumanis brings charges against Patricia Gregory, or her site goes dark, Gregory will be listed on the "Do Not Hire” portion of  Familylawcourts.com.

Meanwhile I just received an invitation to join Bonnie for a day at the races on August 28.  I wonder if I should bet on whether Bonnie answers my questions if I go.

Because Bonnie does not prosecute people that used to work for her...
Especially lesbians.

Patricia Gregory
A simple background check on Patricia Gregory would have exposed her State of California Tax liens and other financial red flags. She also stole money from another client. That is a matter of public record. The other lawyers and judges do not like Patricia Gregory. She is unprofessional and untrustworthy. Perhaps because she worked for the San Diego District Attorney’s office is why she is getting quasi-immunity? Her first job as a lawyer was with the D.A.’s office. Bonnie needs to go too. She needs to be sent packing back to the East Coast were her corrupt and unequal justice is more tolerated.

Something Really Stinks ...
Attorney Patrcia A Gregory of Carlsbad sure sounds like a brazen one. Reading the State Bar document on her up coming disabarment file reads like a "who's who" of smelly attorneys who stick together in the "Good Old Boys Club", or in this case the "Good Old Girls Club! Did someone say Bonnie Dumanis? Who is that? Does anyone really know? Her record I believe speaks for itself. She is reluctant to prosecute many crooked lawyers or cops according to many media press. And what about crime stories who are never released to the media? In this case Gregory appears to be a really shady character in my opinion according to the State Bar's recommendation and decision of disbarment for the same. So Dumanis refuses to prosecute a dirty attorney for stealing over $112,000 who supposingly use to work for her? Regardless of someone who worked for Dumanis or not , we are talking about some serious money here stolen. How much money is enough for a Dumanis's prosecution of a thieving lawyer? $80,000.00 from one victim is not enough Dumanis? According to the State Bar over $112,000.00 was taken by Patrcia A Gregory from two victims. Can we be more frank and call it stolen monies? Where is there a good DA when you need one? It sure is NOT Dumanis! And she wants to be Mayor? God help us. After reading the State Bar document of this attorney it makes me ill to think the victims of this Grand Theft Crime could suffer this knid of loss. Thanks for the heads up of this Attorney. Great article. Why is this story not in the Tribune? Just my humble opinion.

Would like to see a follow up on this Patricia Gregory Disbarment case
I would like to see a follow up on this case Bonnie. I believe you are the first in story and second to the State Bar website to expose this Gregory character to the public. Looking at the Superior Court North County Dometic Division Calander I see Patricia Ann Gregory listed as counsel on august 8th and the 15th 2011. Is Patricia Gregeory still practicing law illegally? As you have said her website is still up, and she is on the North County Court calander as representative of clients. This story touched a chord in me. I would like to see a couple or more follow-ups on this case. Is the district attorney office going to sweep this apparent crime under the rug? This Gregory needs to do a liitle prison time if this alledged huge grand theft is true. Say 7 years or so?

Dumanis should be investigated
Unreal article. I cannot believe Bonnie Dumanis can ignore the facts and decision of the State Bar court and let another attorney facing disbarment stay free of prison.

Gregory stole over $112K according to the State Bar Court documents
My follow up post here is to let the public see and recognize that attorney Patricia Gregory stole over $112K from TWO victims according to the State Bar. Around $80K from one victim, and $27K from another. Why is she still walking these streets, and is this inactive attorney still practicing law? She should be in a pink jump suit. Dumanis should be investigated also. Two crimes in one is the way I see it. It would be a crime if Gregory was NOT prosecuted.

Some Public Court Documents of Patricia A Gregory State Bar Disbarment Trail
We start with a “Promissory Note” from Attorney Patricia A Gregory.

It reads:

“I, Patricia Gregory, owe Luwain Ng the sum of $79,162.50 as of 09/01/08. This total amount plus interest at a rate to be determined by Ms. Ng is due and payable on October 1, 2008.

[It was never payed.]

”In this email, she [Gregory] begged Ng not to file a complaint with the State Bar, stating “If I am turned [in to] the State Bar my life is over … If the State Bar is involved I will be disbarred."

[District Attorney's Office]

On May 12, 2009, Ng mailed a letter to the San Diego District Attorney‟s Office, complaining of the conduct of respondent.

[State Bar investigators contact Gregory]

On June 4, 2009, State Bar investigator Agnes Mina sent a letter to respondent informing her that Ng had filed a State Bar complaint and requesting respondent‟s written response and documents. Respondent [Gregory] received the letter.

[Attorney Patricia A Gregory playing the victim role with an e mail to Ng]

In closing her e-mail to Ng, respondent [Gregory] stated: “If you wanted to punish me, you have succeeded. I am destroyed. You have $20,000, a ridiculously low legal bill and my obligation to pay the $80,000. I have nothing. Seems a bit unfair, no? But you did get your revenge. Hope it was sweet.”

[Our Great San Diego District Attorney Office]

To date the San Diego District Attorney's Office, and Bonnie Dumanis have done nothing to charge Gregory with any crime. Doll and Ng have met with Deputy DA Jeff Dort and investigators at the District Attorney's office numerous times, and have given them the complete transcripts,... read more

Bank Robbers verses White Collar Robber Crime
What is worst? - A Bank robber who robs around $10,000 from a bank and does not get away with it -or - A lawyer who robs over $110,000.00 from 2 clients and gets away with it? Great DA office you have in San Diego.

So THAT'S why she wasn't replying to my emails...
Wow. Holy crap.
She was my divorce lawyer 5 years ago. I needed her again for a modification a couple months ago, and was puzzled as to why her voicemail was always full and she never returned my emails. Well now I understand!!!
I think I may have dodged a massive bullet. I would NEVER have guessed she could do something like that!!!! Un-freakin'-believable and revolting.
I read the minutes. How much more evidence does Bonnie Dumanis need before she actually sets in motion the judicial proceedings she so easily pursues for her own benefit? Sickening.

Hello Former Client
Attorney Patricia Gregory has apparantly ripped off a couple innocent women for massive amounts of big bucks according to the State Bar records. Brazen as she must be , you are lucky it was not you to a tune of over $112 thousand big ones. Hopefully if there is other former clients out there that were ripped off they will see this article by Miss Russel and call the State Bar and file a complaint.

As far as the DA? Who knows. maybey they are waiting for the full disbarment before prosecution. I don't think Gregory can or will get away with it by the State Bar or the District Attorney. At least you would hope not. Yes it is sick that the DA is not invrstigating if this is true. Gregory absolutely needs some prison time and you would only hope all dirty lawyers get justive they deserve.

Creepy
My belief is Bonnie Dumanis would make a horrible mayor. Look at her horrible track record as DA. Now this crap? Where is the justice ? Does she even think for one minute that this attorney will get away from this alleged monsterous grand theft? She is playing politics. Dumanis loves the limelight of politics. My belief is that this lawyer will not walk away scott free. Regardless of Dumanis not willing to prosecute. I read this lawyer use to work for the DA office? HUMMMM

Bonnie Dumanis and Politics
Not taking anything away from the republican party, but we were just wondering, if a criminal stole from a gay republican, do u think Bonnie Dumanis's prosecution team would be on it right away? We do. Two things in common with Dumanis, we found with a little investigation. Attorney Patricia A Gregory is a republican and worked for the Da office. Politics you think with Dumanis's lack of prosecution and investigation?

Will this lawyer see prison time?
Hopefully justice will prevail and this lawyer will see prison time, if of course she gets her day in court. Another lawyer in Cresent City California named Jill A Scholten got 16 months in prison for stealing $12,000 from a client.

http://www.triplicate.com/20091222107781/News/Local-News/Att

Interestingly enough this Patricia A Gregory lawyer allegedly stole 10 times this amount. Would that equate to 10 times as long in prison if found guilty?
Another interesting quote from P Gregory's website claims she teaches graduate courses in business law and ethics! Here is a direct copy from her website, which of course is STILL up!

Quote:

"She currently teaches graduate level courses in Business Law and Ethics".
What?

Here is another paragraph directly from her website claiming she worked for the district attorneys office of san diego.

"During law school she [gregory] worked for a number of San Diego's leading attorneys as a paralegal, where she learned the 'nuts and bolts' of a family law pratice. After graduation, she worked for the Bureau of Child Support Enforcement under the San Diego District Attorney's office which then became the Department of Child Support Services".

Wonder what role she will play in prison?

Patricia Gregory is a troll
I could not hire her because she was so ugly. She looks like a little fat troll with warts and beady little eyes. What a clever thing to do. Get a law degree in your 50’s and then lose your license to practice law in just 5 years of practice.

Patricia is a born loser.
