PAWNBROKERS THAT SUPPORT THE VISUAL ARTS AT RANCHO SANTA FE

 Really? Fake is real?

The Rancho Santa Fe Pawnshop -- located at 907 6th Ave. and E Street, San Diego -- issued a press release Tuesday, Jan. 25, supporting the arts at Rancho Santa Fe. To wit:

"The luxury pawnbrokers of Ranch Santa Fe Pawn shop are lovers of all things crafted by master artisans. That is why they are so exceptional at valuing extraordinary timepieces and fine jewelry, and why we can consistently offer the largest collateral cash loans in San Diego County. While our pawnbrokers don’t offer loans on painting, they do love the visual arts and encourage you to support the Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild."

The purveryors of pawn went on to post details about the Art Guild taken from the society's web site. Which is cool.

"The Rancho Santa Fe Art Guild was formed in 1993 to 1) support and encourage visual artists in our community and county; 2) provide funds for art education and outreach efforts such as scholarships for art majors, programs in schools, art programs, art teaching, education to the public on the benefits of art education and collecting; 3) provide talks on how important the arts are to our lives and society; 4) host field trips to view collections and artist’s studios; and 5) support a gallery with art for sale for the purpose of supporting guild activities and outreach programs.

The majority of our Artist Members are residents of Rancho Santa Fe (51%) and the surrounding area. The primary Guild functions and events are the hanging and promoting new art exhibits in our main gallery and several satellite galleries every 2 months. To learn more about the guild and check on future exhibits, please visit: http://ranchosantafeartguild.org/"

Jumping the Mice for a Solana Beach blogger flogging a national audience

The Pop Five is a series of Pop Candy readers' top five lists featured at America's largest circulating paper -- Guess those free motel copies add up -- USA Today'. Tuesday's contribution came from Karl B. (Random Karl) at Solana Beach, Calif.:

"Recently we've had lists of the top five cats and dogs. Now, let's turn our attention to a surprisingly overrepresented member of the animal kingdom, with Random Karl's Pop 5 Mice in Pop Culture!"

1. Mickey and Minnie. Duh.

2. Pinky and the Brain. For those nights when all you want to do is simply to try to take over the world! Narf.

3. Speedy Gonzales. When you're the fastest mouse in all Mexico, you can outrun all those pesky ethnic stereotypes! Andale! Andale!

4. Mighty Mouse. Every list needs someone or something in a cape!

5. Jerry. Poor Tom.

Do you have a list for the Pop Five? Send it topopcandy@usatoday.com, and look for it on the blog!

Get ready to rumble at 'The Dollhouse' as the San Diego Derby Dolls rock the roller blades...

Dateline -- Del Mar, Calif. Beautiful beaches, tremendous shopping, Bing Crosby and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club...and ROLLER DERBY. HUH?

That's correct. The San Diego Derby Dolls, professional girls roller derby team, calls stately Del Mar home. They played a match last week against the Los Angeles Derby Dolls and are ramping up for a March 26 conforntation between the SD Derby Doll All-Stars and their hated rivals from the Mile High City, the Rocky Mountain Rollergirls at the Dollhouse, namely a banked track at Del Mar Fairgrounds.

Who are the Derby Dolls:

"The San Diego Derby Dolls are the nations first hybrid league of both banked track (the inclined surface) and flat track (on the ground) roller derby. SDDD (est. 2005), the sister league to the Los Angeles Derby Dolls (est. 2003), was founded by former LADD skater, Bonnie D.Stroir (an Oceanside resident commuting to LA for roller derby only).

Derby Dolls Mission Statement: The Derby Dolls are committed to achieving the highest level of competition, integrity and production quality while enriching the lives of our members and community through sport.

SDDD have been founded upon the attributes of athleticism, integrity and respect. We are proud to be America's Finest Roller Derby and pledge to represent San Diego to the fullest degree in America's most exciting sport for women!"

Now, you want to join the team, or at least have some fun at the rink?

"The San Diego Derby Dolls welcome new and transfer skaters! The Dolls are made up of women age 18 and over, and our Junior league hosts an 8-week Junior Camp for girls ages 7-17 throughout the year. We are the only team in the world Ranked Nationally in both Banked and Flat Track.

"We're also always looking for men and women of all ages to join our Stripes Crew of Referees and non-skating officials.

"No experience is required. Even if you have never roller skated a day in your life, the Dolls can teach you! Every new adult league member joins the Derby Dolls via our Boot Camp program. During this time you will get personal instruction and assessments from veteran Derby Doll Coaches. Transfer skaters usually breeze through Boot Camp quickly to make their way into our bouting ranks."

Boot Camp Orientation is the 3rd Monday of each month. Please contact our boot camp recruitment head atlholbert99@yahoo.com to reserve a spot and get directions to our awesome practice facility.
